Overview of role
UPMC Whitfield is recruiting a Theatre Anaesthetic Recovery Nurse for a permanent position working 30 hours per week. The nurse will assist in a wide range of specialties including orthopaedic, general, ophthalmology, gynaecology, ENT, pain management, urology, vascular. Responsibilities also extend to support for anaesthetic and PACU, and development of specialist knowledge within the clinical area.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical
* Ensure the delivery of the highest possible standard of care to all patients.
* Act as preceptor to pre‑registration students, mentor new clinical staff and new non‑clinical staff, and support colleagues when needed.
* Liaise with link lecturers from affiliated nurse education departments, maintaining UPMC Whitfield Hospital as a recognised learning environment for student nurses.
* Develop and maintain effective communication and interpersonal relationships with all members of the multi‑disciplinary team to ensure a good team spirit and collaborative working practices.
* Support the clinical nurse manager by meeting agreed responsibilities as set out by the Assistant Director of Nursing or the Director of Nursing.
* Identify and discuss nursing/patient needs with consultants, nursing team, multidisciplinary team, patients, and carers.
* Maintain highest possible standards of patient care and patient safety at all times.
* Maintain high standards of written and verbal communication, with a working knowledge of all NMBI publications including the Scope of Practice Framework and Code of Professional Misconduct.
* Maintain own professional registration and submit to HR for yearly verification.
* Maintain knowledge of Clinical Risk Reporting Policy, Occupational Health, Facilities Management, Patient Moving and Handling, Resuscitation / Basic Life Support, Health and Safety, and report all relevant incidents.
* Undertake a pro‑active approach to accreditation standards and possess in‑depth knowledge of departmental and hospital policies.
Quality & Audit
* Participate and lead as required in clinical audit and research activity within the field, promoting evidence‑based practice.
* Undertake research/clinical audit, critically analyse results and provide written reports.
* Work closely with the Quality and Patient Safety team to ensure departmental accreditation standards are met.
Health and Safety
* Uphold UPMC Whitfield Hospital’s policies regarding Fire, Infection Control, Radiation Safety, and Health and Safety regulations.
* Identify potential risks for staff, patients, and visitors, and adhere to incident reporting procedures.
* Maintain a general duty of care for health, safety, and well‑being of self, colleagues, visitors, and patients.
* Act as shift co‑ordinator/Team Leader, allocating workload to maintain patient and staff safety.
* Manage workload to ensure patient care needs are met and colleagues can take allocated breaks.
* Develop appropriate IT skills and maintain working knowledge of Isoft.
* Continuously risk‑assess the theatre environment and report incidents per UPMC guidelines.
* Practice research‑based nursing care and maintain personal/professional development.
* Undertake any specific training required to perform the role, e.g. equipment use, specialist medication administration.

In the course of employment you may have access to patient and staff confidential information. You must keep all such records confidential and secure, disclosing only to authorised officers and when required to perform your normal duties. Records must never be left accessible to unauthorised persons.
Additional duties may be performed as required and assigned by the post holder to contribute to role development.
Qualifications & Experience
Qualifications
* Registered Nurse with the general division of the Register of Nurses maintained by the Nursing & Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI).
* Basic Life Support Training.
* Hold a Theatre Qualification (desirable).
Experience
* Demonstrate evidence of Theatre Nursing experience.
Job Specific Competencies and Knowledge
* Knowledge of Infection Control, Quality and Risk Management, and Health & Safety applicable to the hospital.
