The theatre provides a range of surgical services and this role is important in making a significant contribution, developing and maintaining best practice in theatre services.
About the Role
The Healthcare Assistant in Theatre is responsible for the provision of quality service in line with standards of theatre nursing practice. As a key member of the frontline team, the assistant helps deliver individualised patient care under the direction of a registered nurse, ensuring smooth running of the department and high quality patient care.
Responsibilities
Assist with admission of patients, welcoming them and orienting them to the clinical area and hospital environment.
Check each patient bay for appropriate equipment and ensure it is stored correctly.
Perform clerical duties for the Ward/Unit Administrator and Manager, such as preparing patient charts and inputting consumable and financial charges into Meditech.
Serve as the first point of contact for telephone messages and queries from health professionals, patients and relatives.
Support patients with hygiene, nutrition and mobilisation needs; maintain clean and tidy clinical and waiting areas.
Handle cleaning of spills following hospital policy, deliver and collect messages, move beds and furniture under manual handling policy.
Maintain linen cupboards and ensure safe keeping of patient belongings; manage laundry bags and chutes.
Liaise with patients and staff regarding appointments; provide empathetic support to patients and carers.
Be available to be deployed to other hospital areas as requested.
Participate in team meetings and promote a patient‑centred culture; respond to positive and constructive feedback.
Qualifications
Leaving Certificate or equivalent.
Completed all 8 modules of QQI Level 5 in Healthcare.
At least one year relevant experience.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work under pressure and adapt to a flexible schedule.
Team player with a patient‑centred approach.
