Role: Data Scientist
Duration: 12 months + extension (long term project)
Engagement: Contract/freelance (full time, 5 days per week, 8 hour days)
Location: Onsite in Cork 3-4 days per week, remaining remote
General Summary: This position exists to develop advanced analytical models and data-driven solutions that solve complex business problems and generate actionable insights to support strategic decision-making. The Senior Data Scientist applies statistical methods, machine learning techniques, and domain expertise to extract value from data and deliver measurable business impact. This role serves as a technical expert who translates business questions into analytical frameworks and communicates findings to stakeholders across the organization.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Design, develop, and implement statistical models and machine learning algorithms to address business challenges and optimize organizational performance 30%
Conduct exploratory data analysis and feature engineering to identify patterns, trends, and relationships in complex datasets 20%
Collaborate with business stakeholders to define analytical problems, establish success metrics, and translate requirements into technical solutions 15%
Communicate analytical findings, insights, and recommendations to technical and non-technical audiences through visualizations, presentations, and reports 15%
Evaluate model performance, conduct A/B testing, and implement monitoring frameworks to ensure solution effectiveness in production environments 10%
Mentor junior data scientists and contribute to the development of best practices, methodologies, and technical standards for the team 5%
Research and evaluate emerging data science techniques, tools, and technologies to enhance analytical capabilities and solution quality 5%
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs):
Strong proficiency in Python and/or R for statistical analysis and machine learning development
Deep knowledge of statistical methods, machine learning algorithms, and predictive modeling techniques
Experience with machine learning frameworks and libraries such as scikit-learn, TensorFlow, PyTorch, or XGBoost
Advanced SQL skills and ability to work with large datasets across various data platforms
Knowledge of experimental design, A/B testing, and causal inference methodologies
Ability to perform feature engineering and data preprocessing for model development
Strong understanding of model evaluation metrics, validation techniques, and bias detection
Proficiency with data visualization tools and libraries such as Tableau, matplotlib, seaborn, or plotly
Ability to translate complex analytical concepts into clear, actionable insights for diverse audiences
Strong problem-solving skills and ability to frame business problems as analytical questions
Excellent communication and presentation skills for stakeholder engagement
Experience with version control systems and collaborative development practices
Work Experience &/or Education:
Master's degree in Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Economics, or related quantitative field
5+ years of experience in data science, analytics, or related roles applying statistical and machine learning methods
Demonstrated experience developing and deploying predictive models that delivered business value
Proven track record of translating business problems into analytical solutions and communicating results to stakeholders
