We're looking for an enthusiastic journalist to join the team at the Sligo Weekender. The News Reporter will produce high quality content for Sligo's best value and only Irish-owned newspaper, established in 1983 and published every Thursday. Working primarily from our Sligo office, he or she will report directly to the editor, work closely with the newsroom team and represent the company in the Sligo community. Applications will be considered from both experienced journalists and those wishing to launch a career in journalism.
The News Reporter's responsibilities will include but not be limited to
* Reporting from Sligo district and circuit courts and courts from around the country with Sligo cases.
* General reporting on a wide range of Sligo local stories
* Attending council and municipal district meetings to report on motions brought
* Writing excellent Interviews and features on Sligo-related people and topics
* Representing the Sligo Weekender at local events and festivals and reporting on these
* Assisting with promoting the newspaper and our other products via social media
* Assisting the editor and sports editor with sub-editing, proofing and other production tasks
* Working closely with the editor to develop and implement ideas for quality content
* Working with the advertising team on attractive, colourful ad feature content
* Undertaking various other tasks as required by the editor
Desired experience and qualifications for the News Reporter
* Ability to produce large amounts of high-quality Sligo-related copy under pressure
* Confident and competent user of computers
* Ability to take general news photographs
* A sharp eye for potential legal issues in copy
* Outgoing, enthusiastic outlook, excellent communications skills and a friendly attitude
* A keen news sense and an eye for a quality story, demonstrated with previous work
* The desire to learn and develop your skills and abilities – which we will facilitate
