We are looking for an experienced and passionate Café Manager to lead our friendly team at Café Lounge, which is currently undergoing a light refurbishment ahead of reopening with a fresh new look.
This role is ideal for someone who loves coffee, enjoys working with people, and takes pride in creating an exceptional customer experience.
Café Lounge belongs to Artessa - our award winning local coffee roastery just across town, so everything we do revolves around great coffee.
The café serves as Artessa's shop window, offering espresso and filter coffees made with precision and care, alongside a small selection of teas and sweet treats.
We also have a retail area featuring Artessa's full range of freshly roasted coffees, brewing accessories, and loose tea leaves.
As Café Manager, you'll oversee the day-to-day running of the café, guide a small team of three baristas, and maintain the high standards our customers love.
You'll also collaborate with Artessa's social media manager to promote our coffees, products, and the café itself.
Our café is open from 9:00am to 5pm, we are closed on Sundays and Bank holidays.
Our shifts are hours.
The Café Manager normally works four shifts per week in the café, alongside the team, and carries out additional managerial tasks as needed.
Your role:
Daily Operations & Team Leadership
Oversee the smooth daily running of Café Lounge and lead a small, friendly team of three baristas.
Lead by example ensuring professional, friendly, and efficient service at all times.
Manage daily opening and closing procedures, including tills, equipment checks, and café presentation.
Support staff in understanding coffee origins, roast styles, and flavour profiles to guide customers effectively.
Maintain HACCP, health & safety, and hygiene standards in line with company policies.
Use the Square POS system for transactions, reports, stock control and rota.
Ensure the café environment remains welcoming, clean, and organised throughout the day.
Coffee Quality & Brewing Standards
Ensure all brewing equipment is clean, well-maintained, and functioning properly.
Maintain and monitor espresso and filter brewing quality, adjusting grinder settings and recipes as needed.
Ensure all coffee drinks - espresso, filter and specialty brews - are prepared and served to Artessa's high standards.
Support staff in understanding coffee origins, roast styles, and flavour profiles to guide customers effectively.
Retail & Product Management
Manage stock and ordering for both café and retail products, including coffee, tea, and brewing accessories.
Keep retail shelves and displays well-stocked, tidy, and visually appealing.
Support and train team members on the job to maintain quality, efficiency, and great customer service.
Identify trends in customer preferences and recommend new coffees or products.
Customer Experience
Create a welcoming atmosphere that reflects Café Lounge's calm and authentic identity.
Handle customer feedback or complaints with professionalism and care.
Build relationships with regular customers and promote new coffees and products naturally through conversation.
Encourage repeat visits by maintaining personal, attentive service.
Marketing & Brand Support
Collaborate with Artessa's social media manager on café-related content: e.g. seasonal drinks, new coffees, or behind-the-scenes moments.
Provide photos, updates, or ideas from daily café life for social media use.
Support small in-store promotions such as sampling or featured filter coffees.
Represent the Artessa brand consistently through the café's atmosphere, product presentation, and customer engagement.
Administration, Systems & Communication
Prepare and manage weekly staff rotas in line with café needs and staff availability.
Use the Square POS system for daily transactions, reports, and stock management of both café and retail sales.
Maintain stock records and communicate ordering needs to the roastery and suppliers.
Monitor ingredient usage to minimise waste and control costs.
Record and report operational or maintenance issues promptly to the Director.
Ensure that health and safety, cleaning, and HACCP records are up to date and compliant.
Requirements:
Previous experience in hospitality management or café supervision is essential.
Strong knowledge of coffee preparation and brewing methods — from espresso to filter.
Genuine passion for coffee and for delivering an exceptional customer experience.
Confident in managing a small team and leading by example during busy times.
Good organisational skills — able to plan rotas, manage stock, and coordinate daily operations.
Comfortable using POS systems (experience with Square is an advantage).
Good communication skills and proficiency in English.
Hands-on, energetic, and able to multitask effectively in a fast-paced environment.
Physically able to stand, walk, and maintain the workspace throughout the shift.
