Meta is looking for a Lead Counsel (Data Protection) to advise on data protection issues primarily related to human resources and security-related matters. You will help drive high-profile, internal initiatives across the business involving complex legal and regulatory issues. This requires business acumen, a substantive knowledge of EU/UK privacy laws, and the capacity to both work independently and with large multi-stakeholder teams.


Lead Counsel, Data Protection Responsibilities

1. Support Meta’s global privacy program, including by developing and improving privacy frameworks and processes to ensure we meet our obligations under global privacy laws.
2. Support business teams in evaluating the impact of privacy laws, regulatory guidance, enforcement actions, and other obligations on new and existing HR and security processes and internal tools and features.
3. Develop and maintain subject-matter expertise in relevant areas.
4. Support members of the legal, policy, and business teams on privacy matters, including in areas related to data subject rights, recruitment, and use of AI in the workplace.
5. Engage with privacy regulators in connection with new privacy features and initiatives.


Minimum Qualifications

1. Solicitor or barrister (qualified to practice law in at least one European jurisdiction or the UK).
2. Minimum of 5+ years of relevant legal experience, including at a law firm or prior in-house experience (applicable litigation, regulatory or more general product counselling experience will be considered).
3. Articulate and analytical legal professional, who is diligent, proactive, collaborative, and who has demonstrated sound legal and business judgment and strategic thinking.
4. Working knowledge of global privacy laws, regulations, privacy programs and industry guidelines.
5. Experience working on multiple projects in a deadline-focused environment, delivering practical advice under pressure.
6. Experience using business judgment and with client counseling.
7. Experience taking on projects involving different subject matters, and working with cross-functional organizations to drive alignment.
8. Enthusiastic about technology and its potential for positive impact in peoples’ lives.

Meta requires all employed attorneys to have a law degree or equivalent certificate to permit the practice of law and be appropriately licensed and authorized to practice law for the company in their assigned work location. Unless prohibited under local law, an attorney must hold a current practicing certificate (including where required from the relevant authority in the jurisdiction of the assigned work location) or the local law equivalent bar registration or license as may be applicable.


Preferred Qualifications

1. Employment law or HR experience.
2. Experience of working on privacy and data protection issues arising in the context of areas such as HR data practices, security, incident response, or privacy program implementation/management.
3. Experience supporting a global team at an Internet services and technology company.
