Job Description:
The Tyndall National Institute at University College Cork is inviting applications for a 12-month postdoctoral researcher position, starting as soon as possible. The position is funded by an industry client and focuses on first principles simulations of thin film materials processing, including deposition and etch techniques like ALD and ALE. The successful candidate will join the Materials Modelling for Devices Group, led by Michael Nolan, and collaborate with a team of PhD and postdoctoral researchers specializing in atomic level processing, with access to an extensive network of industry collaborators.
As electronic device miniaturization advances, discovering new materials and processing methods is vital. Atomic level processing involves techniques such as atomic layer deposition (ALD), atomic layer etching (ALE), and molecular layer deposition (MLD). Using density functional theory (DFT), the candidate will contribute to screening precursors, testing chemistries, and understanding deposition and etch processes.
This role involves working on industry-defined problems, developing novel processes, and communicating results effectively. The candidate should be capable of working to deadlines and delivering high-quality outcomes.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
* Design and execute large-scale DFT simulations to develop new atomic-level processing chemistries for deposition and etching.
* Analyze simulation results and communicate findings to industry partners through presentations and reports.
* Develop machine learning models for materials and processing, depending on the candidate's background.
Other Responsibilities
* Participate in educational and public engagement activities.
* Ensure compliance with Tyndall's Quality Management System and Health & Safety standards.
* Perform additional duties within the scope of the position as required.
Qualifications and Skills
* PhD in chemistry, physics, or materials science (or submitted thesis at application time).
* Strong background in quantum chemistry, computational chemistry, and physics.
* Experience with surface and interface calculations is desirable.
* Programming skills, especially in Python, and familiarity with machine learning/AI are advantageous.
* Proven publication record and ability to communicate results effectively in English.
* Experience with high-performance computing infrastructure.
