Job Purpose

The Urology Clinical Nurse Specialist will provide advanced clinical expertise, emotional support, education, and care coordination for patients with urological conditions across the continuum of care. This role will bridge existing gaps in patient education, streamline multidisciplinary collaboration, enhance early intervention strategies, and ensure that service delivery aligns with best practice and national standards.

Key Responsibilities

1. Clinical Assessment and Patient Care

· Undertake comprehensive physical, emotional, social, and spiritual assessments for urology patients.

· Develop, implement, and regularly review individualised care plans in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team.

· Create and oversee patient care pathways, particularly for those undergoing treatment for urological conditions.

· Contribute to the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of high-quality nursing care to maximise health outcomes and quality of life.

· Lead or contribute to nurse-led triage and education clinics, including virtual consultations.

2. Patient Support and Communication

· Provide a telephone and email advice helpline for patients and their families.

· Schedule follow-up calls, particularly post-diagnosis (e.g., cancer), to offer ongoing support and guidance.

· Establish effective referral and communication pathways with consultants, GPs, practice nurses, and allied health professionals.

· Ensure patient confidentiality, dignity, and respect are maintained at all times in line with hospital philosophy and ethical codes.

3. Clinical Leadership and Service Development

· Act as a role model and expert practitioner in urology nursing, demonstrating high standards of clinical practice.

· Work closely with the clinical team to ensure a cohesive, patient-centred service.

· Take a lead or supporting role in developing new care pathways (e.g., haematuria, urinary retention, LUTS).

· Drive innovation in clinical methods of working within established practices.

· Serve as a first line contact for staff regarding urology-related queries.

4. Quality Improvement and Audit

· Initiate and support quality improvement projects and clinical audits to evaluate and enhance patient care.

· Collect and analyse patient feedback through regular questionnaires and service audits to inform service planning.

· In conjunction with the Urology Consultants, develop and update clinical protocols to support best practices in urological nursing care.

· Make recommendations for service improvements based on audit findings and clinical insight.

5. Education, Research, and Professional Development

· Promote and participate in nursing research and evidence-based practice to improve patient outcomes.

· Identify areas for nursing research and initiate projects at unit level, supporting other nurses' development.

· Facilitate staff education and contribute to training programmes related to urology.

· Attend relevant conferences, courses, and professional forums to maintain and advance clinical expertise.

· Ensure personal supervision needs and professional development goals are actively pursued.

6. Digital Health and Information Systems

· Use digital systems to enhance care planning, data collection, and monitoring of patient outcomes.

· Work with hospital IT systems to ensure efficient integration of patient care and administrative functions.

· Monitor and support the development of nurse-led digital services (e.g., virtual clinics, eHealth education).

7. Compliance and Governance

· Adhere to NMBI's Code of Professional Conduct and Scope of Practice for Nursing.

· Follow guidance from the National Council for the Professional Development of Nursing and Midwifery regarding the CNS role.

· Ensure compliance with hospital policies, national guidelines, and service-level procedures.

8. Professional Development

· Undertake continuing professional development, availing of formal and informal educational opportunities thus ensuring continuing credibility amongst nursing, medical and allied health professionals.

· Maintain and update a personal development portfolio.

Knowledge/Experience

· Be registered on the general division of the register of nurses maintained by NMBI.

· Have at least 3-5 years post registration experience in an acute setting.

· A recognised post-registration nursing qualification in Urology

· Have proven clinical and professional ability.

· Have good communication and leadership skills.

· Have organisational skills which provide structure and continuity of patient care

· Have evidence of commitment to professional development.

· Have excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

· The ability to analyse, report on and effect change in nursing practice.

· A sound knowledge of procedures and protocols in operational matters.

· Competency in use of Microsoft packages.

· A proven ability to work under pressure and use initiative.

· An ability to deal with staff at all levels within the organisation.

· The ability to anticipate trends, identifies opportunities and forward plans for service developments.

· A working knowledge of risk management, clinical audit and research.

Ensures projects are aligned to organisational priorities, such as improving patient pathways, reducing adverse events, or enhancing patient experience. Monitors progress, evaluates outcomes, and disseminates learning to influence wider practice.

Supports the development of staff knowledge and skills through mentoring, teaching, and role modelling. Provides patient and family education to enable self-management and informed decision-making. Contributes to the professional development of students, junior nurses, and colleagues, promoting a learning culture within the clinical area.

Research & Evidence-Based Practice

Applies the principles of research and critical appraisal to underpin clinical decision-making and service development. Initiates, participates in, or supports research, audits, and quality improvement projects. Disseminates findings to inform best practice and drive innovation in patient care.
