Role Profile
Two positions open within the ERC Synergy Grant‑funded project JUSTICE – Joining Unique Strategies Together for Coercive Interrogation Elimination. This post‑doctoral researcher will conduct a specified programme of research under MRQs 1 and 3 of the project, while engaging across the other two MRQs.
Key Responsibilities
Map compliance of 100 jurisdictions with the 2021 Principles on Effective Interviewing for Investigations and Information‑Gathering (Méndez Principles) and develop a new compliance scale.
Gather data on police interviewing, legal and procedural safeguards in 100 jurisdictions and create an interactive online map of compliance.
Conduct deeper analysis on 30 jurisdictions through expert questionnaires and surveys of police officers, prosecutors, lawyers and academics.
Design, implement and analyse Action Studies in six jurisdictions, observing week‑long investigations by current or recently retired police officers with involvement of lawyers, actors as witnesses, victims and suspects.
Conduct qualitative interviews with individuals who have experienced coercive interrogation in at least ten jurisdictions.
Perform doctrinal research in law, reviewing legislation, case law, policy documents and reports from national, international and civil‑society sources.
Contribute to the development and refinement of the project’s research methodology under PI leadership.
Manage project activities: ethical approvals, conference and event organisation, website content, report and article drafting, project documentation and coordination.
Qualifications & Experience
Applicants should hold a PhD in a relevant discipline (law, criminal justice, psychology, neuroscience or data science) and demonstrate:
Strong empirical research skills and experience with project management.
Knowledge of ethical and data‑privacy issues in research.
Ability to work collaboratively across interdisciplinary teams.
Benefits & Employment Conditions
Salary: IUA Postdoctoral Researcher Salary Scale – PD1 Point 1 to PD1 Point 2 (€46,805 – €47,405). Appointment will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and in line with current Government pay policy. The six‑year period is approximate and may change depending on the candidate’s start date.
