Purpose of Position We are seeking an experienced and research-active academic to supervise postgraduate students undertaking Master's or PhD-level research project.
The successful candidate will play a key role in supporting student development and ensuring the academic quality and integrity of research projects.
This position involves regular engagement with students, offering constructive feedback on research progress, and providing academic mentorship from project inception through to completion.
Reporting to: Dean and Vice Deans of Business and Social Sciences Key Relationships: Dean of School of Business and Social Sciences Vice Deans of Business and Social Sciences Programme Director Faculty and Associate Faculty in the School Students Professional Bodies Academic Operations Team Student Services Team Key Responsibilities: Supervision Support Guide students through all stages of the research process, including the development of research questions, literature review, methodology, data analysis, and final submission.
Establish and maintain a supportive and effective supervisory relationship with each student.
Identify early training needs (including English language or academic writing skills) and advise on suitable development opportunities.
Promote academic integrity and ensure student understanding of ethical research practices.
Hold regular supervision meetings, with written records maintained by both parties.
Ensure procedures are in place for addressing urgent matters or unexpected challenges.
Academic Progress and Research Standards Support the development of a realistic and structured research timeline aligned with institutional requirements and submission deadlines.
Read and provide constructive and timely feedback on student submissions and drafts.
Monitor progress regularly and address underperformance or delays with appropriate guidance or referral to support services.
Assist students in preparing for assessment, and potential thesis resubmissions.
Communication and Engagement Maintain regular contact with students throughout the supervision period.
Where appropriate, advise on dissemination and publication of research.
Actively contribute to internal research seminars and events where students can present their work.
Collaborate with Programme Directors to ensure consistency and quality in research supervision.
Assessment and Quality Assurance Act as first assessor for supervised dissertations and as second assessor for others, in line with internal assessment processes.
Comply with all institutional regulations related to grading, feedback, and internal moderation.
Support students in the final submission of the thesis.
Additional Expectations Participate in all mandatory supervisor development training, both online and in-person.
Respond to student queries in a timely and professional manner.
Maintain a professional approach to supervision.
Stay informed on academic policies, procedures, and best practices related to postgraduate supervision.
Engage in supervisory team meetings.
Qualifications & Experience Required: Essential A Level 8 degree in a relevant discipline is required; applicants without this qualification cannot be considered" Applicants should hold a PhD in a relevant field. Consideration will also be given to those with a Masters by Research or a Masters degree that includes a substantial dissertation, or equivalent professional qualifications at Level 9 (e.g. CFA, ACCA) Three years prior experience working in higher education which includes evidence of involvement in all aspects of student's assessments. Proven experience supervising students at Master's and/or Doctoral level for two years. Actively engaged in academic research, with evidence of ongoing scholarly activity. Desirable Experience supervising part-time postgraduate students. Previous engagement with interdisciplinary or applied research projects. Experience supporting students through publication processes. Experience in using research software packages (e.g., SPSS, NVivo, and related tools). Visa: Must hold a valid working visa. Hourly rate: Associate Faculty rates. Contract: Fixed-term, part - time.
