Overview
IT Lead Engineer - Java - Payments & Cards role at Bank of Ireland Group plc. This opportunity focuses on leading Java engineering within the Payments team to support the bank's digital transformation and payment services.
In this Role, you will
* Design and architect scalable, secure, and high-performance Java-based applications
* Collaborate with business analysts, developers, and QA teams to translate business requirements into technical solutions
* Lead the design and review of system architecture, data models, and integration strategies across the team
* Ensure adherence to coding standards, best practices, and technical documentation
* Participate in Agile ceremonies including sprint planning, reviews, and retrospectives
* Mentor junior developers and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives
* Complete and review BoI conceptual, logical and deployment technical design documentation and equivalent Kyndryl (IBM) documentation
* Troubleshoot application issues and support infrastructure troubleshooting
* Monitor and optimize system performance, scalability, and reliability to meet non-functional requirements
What will make you stand out?
You have 7+ years of hands-on experience in Java/JEE development, with at least 2 years in a technical leadership role. You are a strong expert in Spring Boot and Microservices architecture. You have proven experience working in Agile Scrum environments and with relational databases. You possess problem-solving skills, a proactive mindset with strong communication and leadership abilities, and value teamwork and mentoring others.

Our IT Engineering & Delivery teams design, build, test and deliver technology powering Bank of Ireland. Teams are based in Dublin, Ireland and Belfast, UK, and Bristol, UK, driving digital transformation by modernising platforms, improving resilience, and accelerating software delivery. The focus spans cloud adoption, DevSecOps, automation, cybersecurity and engineering standard processes to ensure secure, scalable, high-performing solutions. This is a hybrid role, based primarily in Dublin, with a typical expectation of spending a minimum of 8 days per month in-person to support collaboration. Specific arrangements will be confirmed by your recruiter.
