Role Overview
Senior Engineering Manager for Data & ML Platform at Datavant, responsible for leading engineering teams that build and maintain the data lake, warehouse, ingestion & streaming frameworks, and ML platform.
Responsibilities
Own the foundation that every Datavant product depends on: data lake and warehouse, ingestion and streaming frameworks, and ML platform.
Manage three teams: Lake & Warehouse Infrastructure, Ingestion & Streaming Frameworks, ML Platform.
Set a unified vision and roadmap for the Data & ML Platform.
Ensure the platform enables product teams to move faster, delivering world‑class ML services.
Ship roadmap commitments, influence technical investments and long‑term bets.
Grow team capacity: mentor, coach, run 1:1s, hire, and retain high‑talent engineers.
Partner with U.S. counterpart on joint hiring, planning, performance, and delivery.
Engage with product, research, data, and clinical stakeholders; contribute to engineering‑wide decisions.
Manage vendor and platform spend: cloud costs, model/API spend, GPU capacity planning, contracts.
Ensure compliance with regulated‑data guardrails (PHI safety, auditability, lineage, clinical safety, HIPAA, HITRUST, SOC 2, GDPR).
Qualifications
At least 8 years industry experience developing software or managing Cloud Infrastructure and at least 3 years managing teams of Individual Contributors.
Hands‑on technical depth: write production code, review PRs, unblock senior engineers.
AI‑native working style: fluent in Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot, or equivalent AI tools.
Leadership track record: led data or ML platform teams, set long‑term vision, grew senior engineers.
Data platform expertise: built modern data platforms – batch/streaming ingestion, lakehouse/warehouse, open table formats, governance, catalog, lineage, cost‑optimisation.
Experience with HIPAA, HITRUST, SOC 2, GDPR, or similar regimes and a pragmatic approach to shipping quickly while meeting them.
Excellent communication: proactive communicator, good team player, thrives in ambiguity.
Nice to Have
Experience with healthcare data (EHR, claims, clinical documents, HL7/FHIR).
Experience with GPU capacity planning (strategic, tactical, operational).
Experience leading a team that runs its own evaluation and red‑teaming for clinical or safety‑sensitive AI.
