Overview
We are seeking a Principal Structural Engineer – HV Substations to be based in one of our Republic of Ireland offices. The successful candidate will work in a structural team within a multidisciplinary office and will work on Power and Energy projects primarily in the design of High Voltage Substations. The candidate should be self‑motivated, enthusiastic, hardworking, flexible, willing to take responsibility and comfortable working as part of a team.
Responsibilities
Providing lead structural engineering design input to major electrical power infrastructural development projects through all lifecycle stages from feasibility and front‑end engineering to detailed design, site construction monitoring and commissioning.
Preparation of project reports (Planning, Tender, Construction Stage) with an ability to communicate complex technical matters with crystal clear clarity.
Communication of design intent via PowerPoint presentations in layman terms to technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
Preparation of fee proposals and site specific quality submissions for design contracts with public and private clients.
Oversight of preparation of design drawings.
Undertaking duties of Ancillary Certifier for the Civil & Structural (C&S) discipline.
Financial management of design budgets.
Supervising and mentoring other structural engineers who will be reporting into the successful candidate.
Manage both personal workload and the workload of a small team of structural engineers who will report into the candidate.
Qualifications
Chartered Engineer with Engineers Ireland or Institution of Structural Engineers.
Extensive experience in design and owners engineering of high‑voltage AIS/GIS substations (110kV to 400kV) and grid development projects.
Familiarity and experience with Irish TSO and DNO standards and processes.
Strong understanding of design principles, standards, and codes relevant to substation and infrastructure projects.
Good communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to prioritise and manage personal and team workload effectively.
Experience in delivery of Structural Engineering Design to Eurocodes. Proficient in MS Office Suite.
Experience in use of structural design software (Robot and Tekla Structural Designer would be advantageous).
Experience acting as Lead Project C+S engineer on multi‑disciplined power and energy projects, including meeting attendance with clients and other design team members.
