Overview
Volunteer: Chairperson - Marathon Events Management DAC
Irish Life Dublin Marathon & Race Series is seeking a Chair to lead its board. This role involves guiding the board in overseeing the Organisation’s strategic direction, governance, and overall performance. The Chair is the primary Board link to the Chief Executive, who is responsible for day-to-day operations.
Responsibilities
* Lead the Board to develop a cohesive and effective team, facilitate board meetings, demonstrate strong leadership, and support the Chief Executive, while adhering to best governance practices.
* Set strategy with the board and Chief Executive to establish goals and ensure they are met.
* Oversee the Organisation’s finances, risk, compliance, and regulatory requirements; involve all board members in committee activities and assign committee chairs.
* Facilitate productive board meetings with purposeful agendas in collaboration with the Chief Executive; ensure key decisions are made with appropriate information and evaluation.
* Partner with the Chief Executive, supporting and complementing each other; oversee the evaluation of the Chief Executive.
* Maintain visibility in the community and cultivate relationships with key stakeholders.
* Lead comprehensive board self-assessments and individual board/committee member reviews; identify future leadership candidates for Board and Committee Chair roles.
Skills and Experience
* Experience in senior roles within not-for-profit or commercial organisations; experience in leadership, strategy development, governance, risk management, financial management, and commercial management.
* Board experience as a member or as a Chair in a similar organisation, or senior leadership in a for-profit organisation.
* Experience in group facilitation and engagement; ability to foster open communication.
* Ability to develop strong relationships with the Chief Executive and fellow board members.
* Strategic thinker capable of collaborating with a diverse team to shape the Organisation’s direction.
* Act with due care, skill, integrity, and in the best interests of the Organisation.
* Commitment of time, interest, and dedication to the role; uphold high governance standards, ethics, and transparency.
* Demonstrated commitment to exceptional board practices and to championing the Organisation’s mission within the community and with potential partners and stakeholders.
* Willingness to demonstrate behaviours and values; interest or background in running, athletics, or sports is beneficial but not required.
* No specific qualification required; qualifications or training completed would be advantageous.
Board Meetings
There are approximately seven board meetings per year, held in person in Dublin, typically in the evening (6:00 pm – 8:00 pm).
Board Committee Meetings
There are four Board Committees: Finance & Audit, Risk & Governance, Nominations, and Commercial. The Chair will chair the Nominations Committee, which typically meets twice a year. Committee meetings are conducted online in the evening (approximately 6:30 pm – 7:45 pm).
Additional
In addition to attending meetings, the Chair is expected to be available to attend race events throughout the year and engage in stakeholder engagement.
