Wellman International is a leading European producer of recycled polyester staple fibres, using recycled post‑consumer PET bottles and other PET material as a raw material source. Wellman has been in operation since 1973 and is a fully owned UG Group Company.
Based in Cavan, Ireland, fibres produced by Wellman are suitable for a diverse and extensive range of applications, extending from home furnishings (filling fibres for duvets, pillows, cushions) to automotive and technical (interior moulded parts, filtration, insulation) and personal hygiene (diapers adult incontinence, female care).
The process at Wellman International also enables customers to send back polyester material which can be utilised in the fibre production process, facilitating circular and closed loop programs and further enhancing the company’s sustainability credentials.
Position Summary:
The plane senior electrical engineer takes full responsibility for the entire electrical maintenance on site including the MV & LV systems. Actively working with the Maintenance team in order to best utilise our resources by leading the electrical team in solving issues in a timely and efficient manner.
Main Duties & Responsibilities:
Leadership & Management
Take a lead role in managing the electrical maintenance team including WIL craft and contractors.
Act as Site Electrical Duty Holder with responsibility for the safe operation, maintenance and statutory compliance of all MV and LV systems up to 10 kV.
Ensure clear delegation of electrical responsibilities and competence verification for all personnel involved in electrical work.
Proactively plan and schedule resources, supplies and maintenance/project activities to ensure safe and efficient plant operation.
Actively liaise with and promote co-operation between management, craft, contractors and other groups to deliver continual improvement and achieve plant objectives.
Assist with the ongoing development and review of the CMMS including PMs, standard jobs, asset data, procedures, drawings and statutory inspection records.
Electrical Governance & Compliance
Take full responsibility for all MV and LV installations, maintenance, operations and support across the site systems up to 10 kV.
Ensure compliance with:
The Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005
ET101 (current edition) for LV installations
Ensure all electrical works are inspected, tested and documented prior to energisation.
Ensure that all Controlled Electrical Works (where applicable) are carried out and certified by a Registered Electrical Contractor.
Approve energisation of new or modified electrical systems only following documented commissioning, inspection and testing.
Maintain and regularly review:
Up‑to‑date Single Line Diagrams
Earthing system studies and test records
Establish and maintain a documented Electrical Safety Management System including audit and review processes.
Ensure compliance with insurer engineering survey recommendations relating to electrical systems.
MV Operations & Authorisation
Establish and maintain Site Electrical Safety Rules for MV operations.
Implement and manage a formal Authorised Person / Competent Person system for HV switching.
Ensure HV switching is carried out only by trained and formally authorised personnel.
Maintain switching procedures, logs, and permit‑to‑work systems for MV activities.
Ensure periodic verification and review of protection relay settings and coordination with ESB interface protection.
Monitor and manage power factor, harmonics and power quality to ensure compliance with grid requirements.
Provide annual reporting on electrical system status, statutory compliance and energy performance.
Manage an Energy team to deliver energy efficiency and decarbonisation projects.
Support strategic initiatives to reduce energy usage and optimise load management across the plant.
Project Responsibilities
Manage electrical projects including design, design review, technical approval, contractor selection and commissioning.
Ensure electrical design risk assessments are completed prior to installation.
Ensure all new installations comply with applicable standards and statutory requirements prior to handover.
Work with cross‑functional teams to develop and implement strategies to reduce energy consumption and improve electrical reliability.
Safety
Review standards and compliance with statutory, HS&E and other regulations.
Ensure best practice is applied and HS&E standards continuously improved.
HS&E issues associated with responsibility need regular review, audit and improvement, including EU directive statutory changes, ISO procedures, electrical regulations and plant policy/procedure.
People
Work with the electrical team to identify training and development needs and act as a mentor to develop members of the team.
Motivation of people to ensure work is completed effectively and knowledge is shared within the group.
Finance
Ensure that competent suppliers and contractors are selected in a commercial acceptable manner within your area of responsibility.
Assist and make recommendations for the selection of cost effective energy suppliers, including annual review of these.
Continual review of the need to spend money, compared with the cost benefits achieved, including budget, actual cost comparison and reporting.
General
Manage, set objectives and review progress in line with company objectives.
Skills, Knowledge & Experience:
Level 8 degree qualified in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
Minimum of 10 years’ experience in an industrial manufacturing environment with considerable exposure to the engineering function.
Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
Understanding of PLCs (Mitsubishi and Siemens).
Understanding of inverters (Mitsubishi and Siemens).
High voltage switching operations.
Power quality and harmonics.
Instrumentation and control.
Maintenance management.
