About The Royal Irish Academy Of Music The Royal Irish Academy of Music is Irelands oldest conservatoire, ranked in the top 50 institutions in the world for the performing arts. We train gifted musicians from all over the world for careers in music performance, composition and pedagogy. Our graduates are innovative and reflective, with skills that enable them to take on the challenge of a life in the creative arts with confidence and zest. Our teaching staff includes many international prize-winners and principals of professional orchestras in Ireland. It also includes individuals whose names have become synonymous with music education in Ireland. We are a place of flourishing Funding and Governance The Academy was founded in Dublin in 1848, supported by grants from Parliament, bequests, donations and endowments and was reconstituted in 1856 as the Royal Irish Academy of Music for the advancement of Musical Education in Ireland. In 1889, the Academy was constituted under the Commissioners of Charitable Donations and Bequests for Ireland and the Educational Endowments (Ireland) Act, 1885, to frame a Scheme (i.e. Statute) for the future government and management of one Governing Body of the several Endowments then separately administered. The Scheme now falls within the remit of the Charities Regulatory Authority under the (Irish) Charities Act, 2009. Under the Constitution, the Board of Governors is the governing body of the Academy with the power to perform the functions of the Academy. The Director is responsible to the Board for the implementation of the Boards policies. The Board of Governors has the following sub-committees to support its work: Finance Committee Audit and Risk Committee Governance and Nominations Committee Board of Studies (Academic Committee) We currently have over 110 teachers (full time and part time); over 40 administrative and support staff, and approximately 90 seasonal part time examiners. ROLEDESCRIPTION: At RIAM, we are at the midpoint of an exciting and ambitious journey. In 2023, we opened a new €27m, 6,500 sq m campus and recital hall, placing the Academy on a par with the best conservatoires in the world and creating a powerful platform for the next stage of our transformation. As we move towards the delivery of our 20262030 Strategy, we are seeking a Head of Digital and Technology to provide strategic leadership of our digital and technology environment, ensuring that ICT systems, data and digital platforms are fully aligned with our evolving mission, teaching and learning model, and long-term ambitions. At the heart of this next phase is a cultural shift, embracing music as both an art and a science, recognising its profound societal impact, and using technology thoughtfully to enable excellence, innovation and connection across the Academy. The Head of Digital and Technology will join a small, committed ICT function and work closely with colleagues across academic faculty, administrative services and leadership teams. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer and operating as a key member of the Senior Management Team, the role offers significant scope to shape how technology, data and digital capability support teaching, learning and organisational effectiveness. The successful candidate will be encouraged to build on strong foundations while leading the next phase of digital maturity at RIAM, developing people, partnerships and systems that move the Academy. Role Purpose Provide strategic leadership for the Academys digital and technology environment, ensuring that ICT systems, data and digital platforms effectively support RIAMs mission, teaching and learning, operational effectiveness and long-term strategic ambitions. The role balances strategic digital leadership with oversight of secure, reliable ICT operations. Key Areas of Responsibility Digital Strategy & Transformation Develop and deliver a digital and technology roadmap aligned with the RIAM 180 strategy (Available on request) Identify opportunities where technology can enhance learning, collaboration and institutional capability Guide the adoption of emerging technologies where appropriate (e.g. data analytics, AI-enabled insights) Institutional Systems & Data Oversee the architecture and integration of key institutional systems (e.g. student information systems, learning platforms, finance systems, CRM) Promote effective use of institutional data to support decision-making Support the development of a single source of truth for organisational data Cybersecurity & Digital Risk Ensure the Academy maintains a secure and resilient digital environment Oversee cybersecurity practices, data protection compliance and business continuity planning Manage risk associated with digital systems and third-party technology providers Digital Learning & Collaboration Support the effective use of digital technologies in teaching, learning and research Enable collaboration tools and digital platforms that support staff, students and external partners ICT Operations & Service Delivery Oversee reliable day-to-day ICT operations and user support Manage relationships with external ICT service providers and technology vendors Ensure ICT services are delivered efficiently and cost-effectively within the Academys resources Leadership & Governance Provide strategic advice to the Executive Team on technology and digital capability Ensure ICT investment aligns with organisational priorities Contribute to institutional planning and governance related to digital systems and information management Success in the Role Success would mean that: Technology effectively supports RIAMs strategic ambitions Staff and students experience reliable, user-friendly digital systems Institutional systems and data are well integrated and effectively used The Academy maintains a secure and resilient ICT environment Technology investment delivers value within the Academys not-for-profit context Experience, Qualifications and Knowledge The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong blend of strategic leadership, technical understanding and operational delivery experience, with the ability to translate digital ambition into practical outcomes in a complex organisation. They will have: Significant senior level experience leading ICT and digital functions, ideally within a higher education, cultural, public sector or not for profit environment Proven experience of developing and delivering digital and technology strategies aligned to organisational goals Experience overseeing complex ICT environments, including core systems, data architecture, digital platforms and third party service providers A strong understanding of cybersecurity, data protection, digital risk and business continuity planning Experience enabling digital solutions that support teaching, learning, collaboration and organisational effectiveness Demonstrated experience advising senior leadership and contributing to organisational governance and strategic planning Qualifications and knowledge: A relevant third level qualification in ICT, digital transformation, information systems or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience Strong working knowledge of ICT governance, data management and information security best practice Understanding of the role of technology in modern learning environments Knowledge of GDPR and data protection obligations in an Irish or EU context Person Specification Skills and Competencies The successful candidate will be able to: Think strategically while maintaining oversight of reliable and secure ICT operations Translate complex technical issues into clear, practical advice for non technical audiences Lead digital change in a collaborative, inclusive and user focused way Balance innovation with risk management, value for money and organisational capacity Build strong relationships with internal stakeholders, external partners and service providers Make evidence based decisions using data and insight Manage multiple priorities in a dynamic and evolving environment Personal Qualities They will demonstrate: A collaborative and values driven leadership style Strong personal credibility and professional integrity A calm, solutions focused approach to problem solving Curiosity and openness to new ideas, technologies and ways of working Commitment to continuous improvement and organisational learning Alignment with RIAMs mission, values and ambition for excellence in music education APPLICATION Pleaseemailacoverletter*(500 words max)andCV as one document in PDF format only,outlining your experience and suitability for the roleto Ruth Meehan.
