Under immediate supervision, performs lifeguard duties at a municipal beach or swimming pool. Teaches beginning and advanced swimming instruction. Monitors swimmers. Provides emergency assistance when needed. Cleans and maintains the pool and pool area which includes the filtration system. Transports youth and adults. Performs related duties as required. TYPICAL TASKS: Assists in the patrolling and supervising of swimming activities at public pools and beaches. Rescues persons who are in danger of drowning. Acts as general lookout at assigned stations. Administers first aid to persons in emergency situations arising under a lifeguard's jurisdiction. Patrols unguarded beach areas. Checks on violations of beach regulations. Administers certain responsible disciplinary measures designed to enforce rules and regulations. Conducts group and individual swimming lessons. Assists in conducting swimming meets and special aquatic programs. Removes debris and other physical hazards from beach and swimming areas. Ropes off swimming areas. Posts storm warnings to swimmers. Attends institutes, special lectures, and staff meetings. Reports accidents. Makes reports and keeps records when necessary. Supervises, maintains, and uses life saving equipment. Assists in finding, restoring or reporting lost articles. Deals with large numbers of people and the problems arising at beaches and pools. Performs such other tasks as may be assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
A High School Diploma or GED is required. The equivalent of two summers of experience in outdoor and indoor pools in a municipal setting is required. Must possess current certifications for American Red Cross Lifeguarding Training and First Aid as well as CPR for the Professional Rescuer. Must have a valid Government ID - State of Ohio Driver's License or State ID. (The Diploma or GED as well as the Driver's License are not required for those persons under the age of 18 who are hired as Seasonal Lifeguards.)
Supplemental Information
Ensure the safety of patrons by preventing and responding to emergencies in a variety of settings. Enforce the facility’s policies, rules, and regulations. Keep the facility clean and up to standard. Must fill out the Pool Operation sheet daily which they have to test the chlorine/ ph./ alkalinity /calcium hardness. Responsible for checking pool equipment to make sure it is safe for the patrons and to report to Manager if equipment is broke. Responsible for opening and closing the pool area. Must wear the proper uniform at all time (male: swim trunks, female one piece swim wear, lifeguard shirts provided by the City and swim shoes). Will be roving from east to west side pools due to operational needs.
