Consultant Psychiatrist, Psychiatry of Old AgeThe Consultant will report to the Clinical Director, Executive Clinical Director, or their nominated manager within the Mental Health Service. The post holder will work closely with the Head of Service, Area Director of Nursing, and Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) leads.The post is based in the South East, with clinical duties delivered across community, outpatient, inpatient, and residential care settings as required.Flexibility in work location may be required in line with service needs.The Consultant will provide clinical leadership, service development input, and governance within the Psychiatry of Old Age service.Key Duties & ResponsibilitiesClinical DutiesDeliver comprehensive psychiatric assessment and management for adults aged 65+ and others with age-related mental health needs.Provide consultant-led outpatient clinics, community visits, day hospital reviews, and inpatient care as required.Lead the multidisciplinary team (MDT) in case formulation, treatment planning, and review.Provide consultation and liaison psychiatry support to:Acute general hospitalsResidential care facilitiesPrimary care teamsParticipate in the management of patients with dementia, including behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD).Ensure timely, evidence-based interventions and continuity of care across the service.On-call CommitmentParticipate in the HSE-approved Consultant on-call rota as required for Psychiatry / Psychiatry of Old Age.Clinical Governance & QualityEnsure the highest standards of clinical practice and governance.Participate in audit, risk management, and quality improvement initiatives.Contribute to service planning, evaluation, and implementation of new models of care.Teaching, Training & ResearchProvide supervision, training, and support for:NCHDsMedical studentsNursing and allied health professionalsEngage in continuing medical education and maintain professional competence in line with the Medical Council requirements.Participate in or support research and service innovation where appropriate.Management & LeadershipProvide effective leadership in service development and the strategic growth of Psychiatry of Old Age services.Collaborate with the Clinical Director and management team to advance integrated care pathways.Contribute to policy development, performance management, and resource utilisationMust be able to take up post immediatelyRegistration as a specialist in the Specialist Division of the Register of Medical Practitioners in the specialty of Old Age PsychiatryAccess to transport to meet the needs of the post across multiple sites.Participation in Garda vetting and occupational health clearance procedures.Proven clinical expertise in Psychiatry of Old Age.Strong leadership and team-working ability within an MDT framework.Excellent communication, clinical decision-making, and problem-solving skills.Understanding of HSE policies, Mental Health Act, Assisted Decision-Making legislation, and safeguarding frameworks.Commitment to patient-centred and integrated service development.
