Job type: 11-months Fixed-term Full-time Contract of Employment

Overview Of Role

* To support the operation of the Sterile Service Unit by providing supervision, assistance and coaching of staff resulting in quality outcomes.
* To assess the workflow and ensure efficient workflow processes to support instrument requirements of Theatre and other units as may be required
* To assist in the production of sterilized medical devices for use in all clinical and other assigned areas designated by the UPMC Sports Surgery Clinic.

Primary Duties And Responsibilities

* Supervisory duties:

Overseeing workflow processes of the CSSD Department to ensure a quality service.

* Direct supervision, guidance, support and participation in work flows to assist with the processing of equipment and instruments.
* Implementation of new processes as directed by CSSD Operational Manager.
* Liaising with theatre staff and CSSD staff to ensure equipment is processed in a timely manner Identifying problems and working with CSSD Operational Manager to resolve.
* Ensuring accuracy of quality assurance and that control processes comply with infection control standards.
* Identifying unsafe practice and responding appropriately to ensure safe outcome keeping CSSD Operational Manager informed.
* Ensuring CSSD technicians maintain a clean, tidy and safe work area at all times.
* Ensuring working time regulations including break times are observed and reporting violations to CSSD Operational Manager.
* Allocating duties to CSSD Technicians as may be needed for the most efficient processing of instruments.
* Assist with the implementation of new processes and technologies within the department as requested by the CSSD Operational Manager.
* Assist the CSSD Operational Manager to develop and maintain orientation program training manual for all new staff to ensure all staff practice within SSC Standards and recommended practices for the decontamination of RIMD.
* Reporting any faults or equipment malfunctions and hazards as they occur to the CSSD Operational Manager to ensure a prompt response. Maintenance/support services should be contacted.
* To identify and document medical devices which are reported by clients to require repair/replace as per CSSD policy. All medical devices sent for repair must be accompanied by a decontamination certificate.
* To co-ordinate work within the Decontamination area, IAP area, unloading, cooling and dispatch. To ensure efficiency, economy and safety of both staff and equipment within the department, ensuring familiarity with all areas, all staff will work in each area on a daily/weekly/monthly basis.
* Contribute to the formulation and development of department policies and procedures.
* Acting up in absence of CSSD Operational Manager.
* Operational Duties:
* Cleaning of trolleys and storage shelves, the steam autoclave and all other equipment within the department as allocated.
* Packing – making up of requisite packs for theatres, wards and departments.
* Sterilizing and issuing goods
* Stocking shelves of sterile supplies, non-sterile disposable items and assisting with stock control and requisitioning.
* Maintenance of records, where appropriate, in line with departmental policy.
* Recording relevant data in the computer or appropriate log books with full clear signature.
* Decontamination of used devices using mechanical and manual methods.
* Inspection and function testing of devices. Any discrepancies or faults to be reported immediately to the CSSD Operational Manager.
* Loading and unloading of sterilizing equipment.
* Handling and storage of raw material and components.
* Taking, recording and delivering phone messages as required.
* Operation of mechanical processing equipment including washer disinfectors, ultrasonic cleaners and sterilizers.

Qualifications & Experience

* Hold a FETAC Level 6 award in Decontamination of RIMD or be in the process of undertaking same.
* Have minimum of 2 year's experience working in decontamination of RIMD.
* Be computer literate and have experience with Fingerprint track and trace system.
* Have accountability in the position regarding reports to the CSSD Manager such as maintaining appropriate records with full historical reports for each item of equipment processed within the department.
* Confidentiality regarding patient information and other hospital data is essential.
