Embedded in the School of Physiotherapy in RCSI, the mission of the CP-Life Research Centre is to generate and translate evidence into improvements in services and supports for people with cerebral palsy and other childhood-onset physical / neurological disabilities through high quality research and innovation.
About this post
Young people with physical disability generally do insufficient physical activity, leading to high risk of poor health in adulthood.
They often desire to be more active but experience barriers to taking part.
In a recent national Delphi consensus, Irish adolescents with physical disability told us they prioritised acceptance by others, involvement (not just "being there", but "being involved"), and improving health and fitness through suitable activities in their communities.
Physical activity referral schemes are complex multicomponent interventions involving the coordinated efforts of healthcare and exercise professionals to support individuals to participate.
These schemes have been developed for noncommunicable diseases and multimorbidity in several countries, including Ireland, but existing schemes lack specificity to the context and experiences of disabled young people.
Co-funded by the Health Research Board and Central Remedial Clinic under the Applied Partnership Award **** funding scheme, the CO-PARtake research programme aims to co-produce a physical activity referral scheme for young people with physical disability, and to test its acceptability when implemented in practice.
Summary of post
We are seeking an enthusiastic, highly-motivated and experienced physiotherapist to join the CO-PARtake team at RCSI and act as a link between scientific research and professional practice in a knowledge broker role to support participation in physical activity by young people with physical disability.
The postholder will work closely with CO-PARtake's principal investigator, senior postdoctoral researcher, public and patient involvement panellists, clinical and community partners, and the project steering group.
The duties of the post are:
Engage with healthcare practitioners, community services and people with lived experience to support development of the CO-PARtake research programme
Analyse enablers, constraints and opportunities within professional work practices to enhance community-based physical activity participation by disabled young people
Facilitate workshops and co-production events with professionals, policy-makers and people with lived experience
Foster strong links between diverse stakeholder groups
Create resources and procedures to implement CO-PARtake physical activity referrals
Act as a liaison between clinical and community services, and the research team; responding to logistical considerations and making necessary adaptations
Assist with research activities including recruitment, data collection and data analysis, under the guidance of the PI and senior post-doctoral researcher
Present protocol and findings at relevant scientific and public fora, including conferences and public engagement events
Advocate for the needs of disabled young people / young people with disability
Translate research evidence into actionable practical applications that can be used effectively in real-world situations to help disabled young people be more physically active.
Qualifications
BSc or MSc degree in physiotherapy
Knowledge and experience (essential)
Strong communication skills (verbal and written)
Clinical experience working with children and / or young people with physical disability
Experience of working on projects with multiple stakeholders of different perspectives
Can operate flexibly within a busy environment, shift focus when required and prioritise conflicting demands
Excellent administrative and IT skills
Knowledge and experience (desirable)
Proven track record in creating change through quality improvement and knowledge translation
Previous research experience with clinical populations, particularly projects involving children, adolescents and young adults
Evidence of project and / or team leadership
