Overview

Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) - Rehabilitation Unit. A senior clinical position reporting to the Director of Nursing, responsible for clinical leadership, day-to-day clinical practices, staff rostering, delegation and supervision, performance and development, clinical governance and risk assessment. The ADON collaborates with the Director of Nursing and Healthcare Manager as part of the senior management team and may deputise for the DON as required.


Responsibilities

* Ensure delivery of the highest standards of nursing and social care to meet each resident's individual needs.
* Ensure care centre policies and expected clinical standards are understood and followed.
* Conduct ward rounds (including with GP) to achieve optimal clinical outcomes.
* Review nursing documentation to reflect required care and treatment; complete assessments and care plans within agreed timeframes and review as required.
* Assess residents at increased risk of pressure sores, falls, or other adverse events; provide advice, support and appropriate management plans.
* Participate in handovers and assist in troubleshooting clinical and non-clinical issues; escalate to the DON as appropriate.
* Ensure medication practices comply with NMBI guidelines and centre policies; liaise with GPs and pharmacy for reviews and audits; ensure staff competency in medication management and provide induction training on medication practices and documentation (including electronic prescriptions).
* Undertake regular MAMS medicines audits and implement action plans with feedback.
* Staff supervision and education: support CNMs, provide direction, mentorship and regular communication; maintain a visible clinical presence; monitor practice and provide constructive feedback; foster teamwork and ongoing improvements in care and practice.
* Conduct regular performance appraisals and development objectives for CNMs, staff nurses and care assistants; coordinate CNM appraisals with the DON.
* Lead in training, education, development and induction of nursing and care staff; assess education needs and implement in-house training (infection control, palliative and end-of-life care, elder abuse, etc.).
* Engage in regular communication with staff to develop team ethos; participate in staff interviews and reviews as appropriate.
* Prepare rosters in collaboration with the DON; monitor usage of temporary/agency staff and maintain staffing levels in line with agreements.
* Clinical and environmental audits: review residents’ documentation, ensure timely assessments and care planning; monitor cleanliness and hygiene; foster effective communication between nurses, carers, housekeeping and catering staff; conduct environmental and hand hygiene audits with corrective action plans.
* Lead medication audits, health & safety audits, risk assessments and develop risk management plans with the DON.
* Audit EpicCare documentation in collaboration with CNMs, staff nurses and carers; address any issues.
* Interact with residents and families daily; act as a point of contact for relatives and visitors in conjunction with the DON; ensure complaints are documented and escalated as needed.
* Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, relatives and families to support residents.
* In the DON's absence, oversee day-to-day clinical practices and care centre operations; maintain open, honest, and clear communication with senior management, direct reports and staff.
* Lead by example as a role model of high-quality nursing care and practice; supervise staff, monitor drug rounds, address clinical issues, and gather information on day-to-day issues to ensure staff compliance with clinical standards and communication with residents.
* Daily activities include checking staff rosters, attending handovers, reviewing resident progress, and supporting and developing clinical practice to empower a confident and competent staff group.
* Implement the company Health and Safety Policy to safeguard the safety and welfare of staff, residents and others.
