Offer Description

The Earth and Ocean Lab at the Department of Geography, University College Cork wishes to appoint a Research Assistant to undertake fieldwork, data processing, project reporting and administration as deemed appropriate by the PI. The Successful candidate will support the DETECT project which aims to assess coastal vulnerability and model it using a combination of CFD modelling and running What-if-scenarios to support environmental decision-making and policy development with a focus on vulnerable coastal habitats in Ireland. The successful candidate will be based at University College Cork within the Earth and Ocean Lab, Department of Geography. The successful candidate will be proficient at fieldwork including the use of UAVs and various other field instrumentation relevant to coastal and marine research (ADCP, Kestral, wind, wave, buoy). Ideally, they will have a strong interest in coastal and marine environments have an understanding of coastal and environmental monitoring techniques. They will be excellent communicators and be able to lead project administration.

Experience and knowledge in any of the following areas would be highly valued: UAV mapping, coastal measurements (ADCP, Kestral, wind, wave, buoy), sediment analysis (particle size) and interpretation; photogrammetry; Irish coastlines and data science. The appointee will work directly with PI’s at University College Cork and University College Dublin, and will be expected to engage with a range of external stakeholder organisations and conduct large amounts of coastal fieldwork. The candidate is expected to start no later than October 1st, 2025.

* To work under the direction of the Principal Investigator/Project Leader.
* To perform a variety of technical duties involved in supporting the research project(s) or programme.
* To provide assistance in conducting research activities, including planning, organizing, conducting, and communicating research studies within the overall scope of a research project.
* To coordinate and perform a variety of independent and team activities involved in the collection, analysis, documentation and some interpretation of information/results.
* To undertake tasks which may include recording results and preparing technical reports including conclusions and recommendations. To coordinate the development of forms, questionnaires and the application of qualitative and quantitative research techniques; write procedures manuals for data collection and coding.
* To present information on research progress and outcomes to others responsible for the research project.
* To provide guidance as required to any support staff and/or research students assisting with the research project, as agreed with the Principal Investigator/Grant holder.
* Ideally to contribute to the publication of findings.
* To confer with the Principal Investigator in developing plans for research projects and to discuss the interpretation of results and the preparation of manuscripts for publication.
* To work with the Principal Investigator to review work assignments and to develop plans to support the research/area.
* To maintain lab books and lab reports.
* Collection of data, research and record maintenance.
* To make minor modifications to existing laboratory procedures and techniques to meet the needs of the particular equipment as required.
* To order and maintain lab equipment and to provide the general essential laboratory services of the unit, i.e. these include but are not limited to the cleaning and maintenance of glass ware, research equipment and laboratory space as directed by the Principal Investigator of his/her nominee.
* To determine and set up instruments, material and apparatus and operate field equipment required for specific tests relevant to the research project(s) or programme, as required.
* To maintain a sufficient inventory of materials, supplies and equipment.
* To ensure Health and Safety in the field and lab.
* To perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
* To carry out any additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post.
Specific Requirements
* A graduate qualification in a field of discipline relevant to the area of investigation i.e. BSc or MSc. In Earth Science, Geography, Geoscience or a cognate discipline
* Undergraduate experience in laboratory practices and in conducting laboratory experiments.
* Some research experience is desirable.
* Good report writing and presentation skills
* Good analytical skills and computer skills.
* An ability to work independently to a tight schedule.
* Capability of working effectively within a team to achieve results.
* Evidence of excellent organisational and communication skills.
* High levels of initiative are encouraged.
* Previous laboratory experience and practices are desired (if relevant).
* Demonstrated ability to use standard field equipment and techniques.
* Demonstrated ability to work well within a team.
* Demonstrated commitment to research.
* Ability to maintain records and excellent computer skills
* Excellent organisational and administrative skills, including a proven ability to work to deadlines.
