The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) in Medical Oncology will provide expert nursing care and support to patients diagnosed with cancer, undergoing systemic anti-cancer therapy (SACT). The CNS Medical Oncology will work closely with the patient, the patient\'s medical team, nursing team and MDT members to ensure evidence-based practice in delivering high standards of care in all areas of patient care. This will include education, clinical resource roles, survivorship care, documentation and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.
Primary Duties And Responsibilities
* Professional / Clinical: Clinical Focus
* The CNS will have a strong patient focus and the direct/indirect care distinction may apply.
* Direct Care CNS: Provide a specialist nursing service for patients with a new cancer diagnosis; undertake comprehensive patient assessment (physical, psychological, social and spiritual elements) using best evidence-based practice.
* Utilize outcomes from patient assessments to develop and implement plans of care/case management in collaboration with the MDT, patient, family and/or carer as appropriate.
* Monitor and evaluate patient response to treatment and amend the care plan with MDT and patient/family as appropriate.
* Make alterations in management of the patient\'s condition in collaboration with the MDT and in line with PPPGs, pathways and policies.
* Accept referrals from MDT colleagues; coordinate investigations, treatment therapies and patient follow-up.
* Provide information, education, advice and counselling to patients and families; support self-management and escalation pathways.
* Collaborate with MDT colleagues across Primary and Secondary Care for seamless service delivery; participate in medication reconciliation and reviews as needed.
* Identify health promotion priorities and supply educational materials to patients and carers.
* Indirect Care: Participate in MDT case reviews; take a lead role in evidence-based PPPGs for supportive cancer care; ensure survivorship care aligns with best practice guidelines and HIQA standards.
* Advocate for patient and family values in collaboration with MDT; promote patient participation in decision making and uphold privacy and confidentiality.
* Establish and improve procedures for collaboration between UPMC Ireland services and other organisations; promote quality service delivery.
* Patient/Client Advocate: Provide efficient, high-quality service; manage time and caseload effectively; monitor evolving service needs; maintain confidentiality and accurate records.
* Maintain knowledge of HIQA standards and comply with relevant HSE protocols; participate in sustainability initiatives where applicable.
* Managerial Responsibilities: Maintain clinical competence; provide information and supportive interventions; contribute to education programmes; mentor and precept nursing colleagues; participate in MDT education activities; promote evidence-based survivorship care; pursue continuing professional development.
* Education & Training: Establish and maintain a patient referral register; record data aligned to KPI guidance; initiate nursing and MDT audit and research; disseminate best evidence in Cancer treatment and survivorship care; contribute to service planning and budget processes.
* Audit & Research: Conduct and evaluate audits and research; implement quality improvements based on findings; align with National Cancer Control Programme guidelines and KPI targets.
* Quality, Risk And Safety: Participate in quality, risk and safety initiatives; comply with complaints policies and safety standards; ensure incident reporting and adherence to equipment safety policies.
* Compliance: Ensure compliance with local organisational hygiene standards and guidelines.
Qualifications & Experience
* Be a registered nurse on the active Register of Nurses and Midwives with An Bord Altranais agus Cnimhseachais na hireann (NMBI) or be eligible to be registered.
* Have completed post-registration study certified by an education provider that verifies attainment of QQI/NFQ Level 8 or higher relevant to Cancer Nursing.
* Or provide written evidence from a higher education institute of an equivalent Level 8 or higher standard relevant to the specialist area.
* Minimum 5 years post-registration full-time experience or an aggregate of 5 years full-time Cancer Nursing experience.
* Evidence of career development and a personal development plan; continuing professional development and competence in delivering cancer nursing care.
* Ability to practice safely and effectively within scope of practice; annual NMBI registration maintained.
* Confirm annual registration with NMBI to UPMC Ireland.
