Upstream Bioprocess Scientist III – Cell Culture & Bioreactor Focus
We are seeking an experienced and driven Upstream Bioprocess Scientist with a strong background in mammalian cell culture, particularly in perfusion systems and bioreactor operations. In this role, you will be responsible for designing, executing, and analysing upstream experiments to support biopharmaceutical development and production using suspension-adapted mammalian cell lines.
You will have hands-on experience with bench-scale and pilot-scale bioreactors, and bring expertise in cell culture optimization, scale-up strategies, and upstream process development. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams including scientists, engineers, and project managers to deliver robust, scalable upstream processes tailored to client needs.
As a technical leader, you will mentor junior team members, troubleshoot complex bioprocess challenges, and contribute to innovation and continuous improvement initiatives across the upstream platform.
Key Responsibilities:
* Design, run, and analyse cell culture experiments with a focus on perfusion and fed-batch bioreactor systems
* Develop and optimise upstream processes for mammalian cell lines (e.g., CHO)
* Operate and troubleshoot single-use and stainless steel bioreactor systems
* Support tech transfer activities and scalability assessments
* Provide technical leadership and mentor junior scientists
* Communicate results effectively through reports, presentations, and client meetings
* Collaborate with downstream, analytical, and QA teams to ensure process integration and quality standards
Qualifications:
* PhD, MSc, or BSc in Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Process Engineering, or a related field
Experience:
* PhD with 3–4+ years of industry experience in bioprocess development
* MSc with 5–6+ years of relevant industry experience
* BSc with 7+ years of experience in upstream process development
Desirable Skills:
* Expertise in perfusion-based cell culture techniques
* Experience in process scale-up and tech transfer
* Familiarity with PAT (Process Analytical Technology) tools and data-driven process control
* Strong project leadership, time management, and communication skills
* Passion for innovation, team collaboration, and problem-solving
