Position Overview
The HVAC/Black Utilities Suite Lead is responsible for the management, coordination, and execution of HVAC and black utilities (e.g., steam, compressed air, chilled water, process cooling water) systems for complex facilities, ensuring project objectives regarding safety, quality, budget, and schedule are met. The ideal candidate possesses strong technical knowledge and leadership experience in the delivery of mechanical works within highly regulated environments such as pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, or industrial sectors.
Key Responsibilities
Project Leadership:
Lead the HVAC and black utilities scope from design through commissioning and handover, ensuring alignment with overall project goals.
Team Management:
Supervise and manage multidisciplinary teams, including designers, engineers, contractors, and commissioning agents.
Technical Oversight:
Provide technical expertise on HVAC and black utilities systems, review and approve designs, specifications, and key project deliverables.
Project Planning & Scheduling:
Develop, monitor, and enforce detailed project schedules for HVAC/black utilities workstreams; proactively manage deviations.
Budget & Cost Control:
Prepare, track, and control budgets for assigned systems; identify value engineering opportunities.
Contractor & Vendor Management:
Oversee procurement, installation, and integration of mechanical equipment; coordinate vendor and contractor performance for safety, quality, schedule, and compliance.
Quality & Regulatory Compliance:
Ensure all works comply with local, state, and federal codes, as well as cGMP/GLP or other applicable standards.
Documentation & Reporting:
Maintain accurate records of project status, issues, risks, and changes; regularly communicate progress to stakeholders.
Commissioning & Start-up:
Lead system commissioning, qualification, and turnover activities to operations, ensuring seamless handover and documentation.
Health, Safety & Environmental:
Champion site safety requirements, perform risk assessments, and promote a culture of zero harm.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or relevant technical discipline (advanced degree preferred).
7+ years of experience in HVAC/black utilities project delivery, preferably within life sciences, pharmaceutical, or industrial environments.
Proven experience in project/suite leadership, team management, and direct contractor supervision.
In-depth knowledge of mechanical engineering principles, building codes, and industry standards (e.g., ASHRAE, cGMP, GEP).
Strong understanding of black utilities systems: steam, compressed gases, chilled water, etc.
Demonstrated ability to manage complex schedules, budgets, risks, and deliverables.
Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
PMP, CEng, or similar professional qualification is advantageous.
Familiarity with commissioning procedures and regulatory compliance requirements.
