Title: Healthcare Chaplain (Part-time) Location: Sligo University Hospital Reports to: Operationally: The Lead Chaplain As Employer: Bishop of Achonry and of Elphin Job Purpose The Roman Catholic Diocese of Elphin is contracted to provide a Chaplaincy Service for Sligo University Hospital.
The Chaplaincy Service, while catering particularly for the spiritual needs of Roman Catholics, is intended to operate in an inclusive manner, open to all and respectful of the religious beliefs and culture of each patient, family member, or member of staff.
The role will be part-time (16 hours) but, of its nature, will require some flexibility in order to co-ordinate with other team-members in providing full cover throughout the week.
The role will involve the Chaplain in pastoral care across all areas, embracing maternity, psychiatry, emergency, palliative care etc.
) Among the personal supports offered by the Diocese will be provision for supervision, funding for continuous professional development time off for an annual retreat, in addition to standard holiday allowance Networking with colleagues in other Dioceses will be encouraged and expected.
The Diocese of Elphin subscribes to the Procedures and Guidance for child Safeguarding developed by the National Board for Safeguarding in the Catholic Church in Ireland and the policy for the Safeguarding of Vulnerable Adults approved by the Bishops of the Western Province.
Principal Accountabilities (Pastoral) To be present on the Hospital Campus for the scheduled hours (which includes the main Hospital and other units around Sligo City).
To work in a constructive partnership with all other members of the chaplaincy team, of whatever religious tradition, sharing information and providing structured hand-over as appropriate.
To build fruitful and respectful working relationships with other hospital personnel (nursing, medical, administration, housekeeping and maintenance).
To engage proactively with patients, with a focus on listening and responding to expressed spiritual and pastoral needs, while respecting the freedom of any patient who chooses not to engage with chaplaincy.
To recognise the particular place of Sacramental ministry as an element of chaplaincy and, where appropriate to refer sacramental requests to the priest chaplains.
To be available to provide spiritual and pastoral support to family members of patients, especially in cases of critical illness or death, keeping in mind the right of patients to respect for confidentiality, even where family members are concerned.
To be available to provide spiritual and pastoral care to staff members as appropriate.
Principal Accountabilities (Administrative) To prepare and submit to the Lead Chaplain such written reports as may be required in keeping with the working arrangements of the Chaplaincy Team.
JOBHOLDER ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Knowledge: (Education and Related Experience) The Chaplain will have: Significant relevant experience in working with people in a pastoral setting A relevant third-level qualification in theology, including spirituality and liturgy Appropriate formation in clinical pastoral education An understanding of and respect for the ethos of the Catholic Church as the governing ethos of the diocese Significant advantages would include: Accreditation by the Healthcare Chaplaincy Board Fluency in another European language Good general level of IT literacy Note: This role, of its very nature, requires the post-holder to be a committed practicing Roman Catholic.
