Senior Application Developer

U.S. Bank is seeking a Senior Application Developer with design and development experience to contribute toward the success of our technology initiatives. In this role you will be part of the EU Authorisation Switch Team responsible for the delivery of highly available and comprehensive solutions in a mission‑critical environment. The application is responsible for handling payment transactions to card schemes and is based on a Stratus OS environment using COBOL language primarily. This is a permanent full‑time position based in our Arklow Office in Ireland.
As a Senior Application Developer you will:
Design, code, test, debug, document, maintain, and modify computer programs of high complexity, significance, and risk.
Recommend solutions to improve business with a focus on core architecture, technology automation and standards.
Guide others through change impact analysis while promoting automation‑first and DevOps‑aligned practices.
Establish, refine and integrate development and test environment tools and software as needed.
Review, analyse, refine and integrate development and test environment tools and software as needed.
Create and recommend improvements to unit, test plans and testing process based on assessment of organizational needs.
Collaborate closely with teams in all stages of software development lifecycle including design, development and testing of the system.
Design basic and detailed program specifications while ensuring that expected application performance levels are achieved by managing interfaces, service levels, standards, and configurations.
Guide technical staff and business partners to investigate, review, and solve complex, multidisciplinary business problems.
Monitor operating efficiency and organizational needs of existing application systems and identify opportunities to fine‑tune and optimise applications of developed projects and recommend technical solutions.
Demonstrate solid understanding of the business needs driving the projects.
Basic Qualifications
Bachelor's degree, or equivalent work experience.
Application Development — 4+ years of real time application development experience.
Application Support — 3+ years of experience supporting mission‑critical applications.
Track record of achievement within the payments industry.
Preferred Skills / Experience
Extensive experience in:
Application design, architecture, and development lifecycle (SDLC), including Agile and CI/CD practices.
Application and system testing with a strong emphasis on automation and quality engineering.
Release management and change control.
Application maintenance and modernization.
IT standards, procedures, and policy.
Modeling (data, process, events, objects).
Strong preference for experience with:
Designing, developing, and maintaining automated unit, integration, and regression tests.
Coding for testability, including use of mocks, stubs, and modular design principles.
Integrating automated testing into CI/CD pipelines and enforcing quality gates.
One or more programming or scripting languages used for test automation.
Subject matter expertise in programming and software engineering best practices, including approaches that emphasize early and continuous testing.
Desirable Experience
Development in a Stratus VOS environment using COBOL is highly desirable but not essential.
Knowledge of and experience in modern development toolchain utilities such as JIRA, Confluence, Git/Bitbucket and Jenkins.
Previous experience working in cross‑organizational agile, portfolio or DevOps environments.
Fully proficient in performing database queries using SQL.
