Job Summary
The Director of Secondary Teaching and Learning provides leadership and vision to plan, align, develop, and implement curriculum and instruction for academics at the secondary level. The director coordinates subject specific guidance and supports district goals in secondary math and college, career, and life readiness. The director reports to the senior director of Teaching and Learning. This position requires a valid Alaska teaching or administrative certificate and has a retirement association with the Alaska Teachers' Retirement System (TRS).
Job Requirements
Required:
A master's degree in educational administration or a related field, with an emphasis in secondary education.
By start date, an Alaska type B administrative certificate with an endorsement for grades 7 to 12.
Five years of satisfactory school administrative experience.
Two years of supervisory experience.
A demonstrated record of success in leading strategic educational initiatives that resulted in measurable improvements in student achievement.
Demonstrated knowledge and application of best practices in curriculum and instruction for academics.
Knowledge, background, and training in supervision and management of secondary schools.
Recent administrative experiences that included developing and managing budgets.
Evidence of exceptional communication, interpersonal, and conflict resolution skills.
Preferred:
Prior teaching and/or administrative experience in public schools.
Knowledge of college, career, and life ready research, programs, and systems.
Recently administrative experience that includes leading curriculum and instructional efforts, helping all students achieve outcomes, and resolving concerns.
Knowledge of principle and practices of professional development and adult learning.
Ability to make effective use of technology and a variety of applications.
Essential Job Functions
Supervises, evaluates, and provides direction for secondary principals.
Works in tandem with the other leaders in academic services to focus the work of secondary-level staff on ensuring that all students leave secondary school prepared for post-K-12 schools or work force, with an emphasis on equity for traditionally underserved student groups.
Facilitates the implementation of a robust multi-tiered system of supports for all students and the implementation of district teaching and learning initiatives.
Uses data to inform decisions and works with the accountability department to evaluate the effectiveness of teaching and learning initiatives.
Performs as ASD liaison to various outside agencies.
Collaborates with the curriculum support leads and district assessment coordinators for instructional support departments such as Special Education, English Language Learners, Title I, etc., to align curriculum, instruction, and assessment resources and practices with a MTSS framework.
Facilitates and coordinates professional development for secondary educators and guides the creation of professional development modules for secondary staff.
Leads a team in the review and adoption process for secondary curriculum.
Provides training to assistant principals on matters of curriculum.
Supports principals in the areas of instructional improvement and effective practices.
Promotes professional growth in curriculum and instruction for principals.
Physical /Mental Demands
The physical demands of this job require frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking and hearing. Specific visual abilities are also required. The employee is regularly required to reach with his/her hands and arms and occasionally lift items weighing less than 40 lbs. Additionally, the employee must be able to understand vague and implicit instructions, be able to readily recall facts and details, handle conflict and make effective decisions under pressure. The employee must have the ability to effectively manage the stress of working with students, parents, and other employees representing diverse cultures, personalities, and work styles in a dynamic work environment.

Work Environment
Work is performed in a professional environment with a wide variety of individuals having differing functions, personalities and abilities, including working with diverse groups of people in a variety of different settings. While performing the duties of this job the employee may be regularly exposed to a video display. The employee may be exposed to outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
