The Department of Arts in Health & Education is located in a landmark building in the heart of Cork city.
Facilities comprise four timetabled studios, separate student and staff kitchens, a multi-use lecture room, smaller tutorial spaces, an information technology lab, as well as a meeting room and offices for staff.
The Department is seeking a suitably qualified and ambitious candidate to work with the team to provide technical support for teaching, learning and research activities.
The role will involve responsibility for the operation and activity related to the studio-based work in the Department of Arts in Health & Education and also assisting with the smooth running of practical classes for students and lecturers.
This position is based in the MTU Crawford College of Art & Design Campus (46 Grand Parade).
The successful candidate will report to the Head of Department of Arts in Health & Education.
Duties and responsibilities of the position: The following indicate some of the principal duties and responsibilities that may be assigned: Organising, preparing, and setting up for workshops, demonstrations, assessments, project and research work in the studios and other areas.
To undertake ordering and management of materials and new equipment.
To provide support for delivery and receipt of goods.
To ensure that studios, materials, and equipment are kept clean, tidy and in good order.
Provide technical assistance to lecturers and students to ensure the safe and smooth running of practical workshops and other events as appropriate.
To carry out routine maintenance of equipment.
To undertake such other duties as the President, Presidents nominee, Head of Department, Senior Technical Officer, or other authorised officer may assign from time to time.
Duties specific to this role include the following: The role will also involve preparing for, and supporting all student work in the facility, supporting staff activity and teaching activity related to the operation, and so will require a broad knowledge of, and ability to carry out a broad range of art and craft related tasks, including but not exclusive to setting up equipment, dying, batik, lino cutting and printing amongst other duties depending on specific curricula.
Maintaining clean and orderly studio spaces and equipment.
Ordering materials for classes and maintaining an inventory of stock.
Processing class material orders and their paperwork with suppliers and the relevant MTU departments.
Working within department budgets.
Following up orders with suppliers; problem solving and communicating problems in the supply chain.
Obtaining quotes and product specs when needed.
Sourcing new suppliers when required.
Undertaking the commissioning of new equipment.
The role will involve ensuring that all relevant quality standards are met and that all Health & Safety standards and requirements are maintained as appropriate in relation to art studio activities.
This will involve complying with SOPs, and associated paperwork.
Preparing class materials, class orders and preparing and packaging artwork for sale within the Department operations.
Assisting with the cleaning and maintenance of studio spaces, stores and pieces of equipment including deep cleaning duties.
Providing support for events and seminars that take place in the 46 Grand Parade building.
Key Skills and Experience requirements for the position: Strong experience in and ability to carry out a cross section of arts and related craft tasks.
Ability to work on own initiative as well as part f a team.
Good organisational, communication and interpersonal skills.
Excellent technical knowledge in designated areas.
Excellent knowledge of Health and Safety legislation and ability to complete relevant paperwork.
Evidence of personal development through further skills development.
Need for flexibility in accepting a cross section of duties performed by others in the grade.
Strong people skills and an interest in supporting staff and student-led developments.
Qualification Requirements for role: Essential: The minimum qualification for this post will be an appropriate qualification of at least a Level 7 (ordinary degree) from a recognised degree awarding authority under Quality and Qualifications Ireland framework Ireland (QQI) in Art, Craft & Design or a cognate discipline.
AND Not less than one years relevant experience after obtaining the above qualification.
Desirable: A candidate with qualifications and/or experience in Art, Craft & Design is highly desirable.
Experience of working in an educational and/or similar environment.
The successful candidate should be a good communicator and team-player, capable of working within a team of students, lecturing staff and facilities support staff.
