Occupational Therapist

As a Staff Grade Occupational Therapist in the Hospital will provide high-quality occupational therapy assessment and intervention services to patients across your designated clinical area(s). You will work as part of a multidisciplinary team to optimise patients’ functional independence, support safe discharge and transition, and contribute to service development and quality improvement.


Responsibilities of Occupational Therapist

* Accept referrals from wards, outpatient departments, day-services, community liaison, etc.
* Conduct occupational therapy assessments of patients’ functional abilities, daily living activities, home environment, equipment needs, cognition/perception, mobility etc.
* Design and implement individualised treatment/rehabilitation plans in line with best practice and evidence.
* Evaluate outcomes of intervention, adapt plans accordingly and document progress.
* Provide input into discharge planning, liaising with community services and external agencies to ensure continuity of care.
* Recommend, select and train patients in use of adaptive equipment, splints, seating, assistive technology where required.
* Maintain accurate, up-to-date records of assessments, treatment, progress notes, discharge summaries in accordance with departmental/professional standards and local policy.
* Ensure that therapy interventions consider patient dignity, choice, safeguarding, equality, and cultural competence.
* Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings, ward rounds, case conferences, and contribute to service-user centred goal-setting.
* Communicate effectively with patients, families/carers, therapists, nursing and medical staff and other health and social care professionals.
* Work collaboratively within the Occupational Therapy department and broader allied health teams.
* Participate in supervision and reflect on practice, identifying development needs and maintaining professional registration requirements.
* Maintain professional standards of practice, adhering to the code of ethics/standards of the regulatory body (CORU) and internal SUH policies.


Requirements of Occupational Therapist

* Degree or recognised qualification in Occupational Therapy.
* Registration with CORU as an Occupational Therapist and maintenance of registration.
* Experience working as an OT (minimum [1-2] years) in an acute hospital, rehabilitation, or equivalent setting.
* Proven ability to assess, plan, implement and evaluate OT interventions for patients with varied needs.
* Good organisational, time-management and prioritisation skills.
* Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
* Ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
* Strong commitment to continuous professional development and evidence-based practice.
