OverviewDeliver care in line with the five core concepts of the role set out in the Framework for the Establishment of Clinical Nurse Specialist Posts, 4th edition, National Council for the Professional Development of Nursing and Midwifery (NCNM) 2008.The role focuses on caseload management for children (under 16 years of age) with respiratory conditions requiring NIV, working as part of the multidisciplinary team to ensure provision of quality care. The CNS will provide nursing leadership, expertise, advice and support in the management of this patient group in conjunction with the Respiratory team.Key responsibilitiesBe a Clinical Expert within the speciality.Provide excellent, evidence-based nursing care for patients and their families.Initiate discharge planning at admission by liaising with the multidisciplinary team, other departments, hospitals, home care teams and community services.Assess the educational needs of families about their conditions, including medications and treatment.Provide staff education.Maintain and update individual patient protocols in conjunction with the appropriate consultant.Plan and assess patient care with the medical and nursing team.Assist with organising NIV clinics.Essential CriteriaBe a registered nurse on the active Register of Nurses and Midwives held by An Bord Altranais and Cnáimhseachais na hÉireann (Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland) or be eligible to be registered.Be registered in the division of Childrens Nursing with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland or, in exceptional circumstances, registered in another division (case by case basis).Have a minimum of 1 year’s post-registration full-time experience or an aggregate of 1 year’s full-time experience in the division of the register in which the application is being made.Have a minimum of 1 year’s experience in the specialist area of respiratory conditions requiring NIV.Have completed a post-registration programme of study that verifies a QQI/NFQ major award at Level 9 or higher (60 ECTS or above) relevant to the specialist area of care, or provide evidence from the Higher Education Institute of equivalent qualification as per National Council for Nursing and Midwifery 4th edition (2008).Be required to demonstrate continuing professional development (CPD) relevant to the specialist area or be supported to obtain the required CPD.Have the ability to practice safely and effectively within their scope of practice.Annual registration: Practitioners must maintain live annual registration on the relevant division of the NMBI.How To Apply & Informal EnquiriesApplications for this post must be accompanied by a cover letter outlining relevant experience that demonstrates how the essential criteria are met.
