The Vacancy

Inis Environmental Consultants Ltd (INIS) is recruiting a full‑time Ecological Clerk of Work (ECoW) to join our growing Ecology team. The role is based at our Ennis, Cork and Dublin offices.


Key Responsibilities

* Advise on protecting biodiversity features on construction sites.
* Provide site‑specific assistance to help clients achieve compliance with environmental legislation.
* Review relevant documents, including AA/NIS, EcIA, CEMP and species and habitat management plans.
* Consult with local planning authorities, biodiversity officers, NPWS and IFI.
* Conduct pre‑construction and construction phase checks for protected species.
* Deliver ecological watching briefs during vegetation clearance, building renovation, demolition, habitat translocation, creation, enhancement and management work.
* Keep daily records, sign off construction documents and produce reports for auditing purposes.


Person Specification

The ideal candidate will have strong enthusiasm to manage ecological or environmental risks on construction projects, advising and supporting clients and contractors on environmental regulations and planning conditions to ensure smooth and cost‑efficient project delivery.


Essential Qualifications and Experience

* A third‑level qualification in environmental science, zoology, ecology, or a similar discipline.
* A minimum of 3 years of work experience on a broad range of ecological projects, ideally involving the delivery of practical conservation advice or management.
* Awareness of Irish and EU environmental protection and wildlife legislation and planning guidelines.
* Excellent communication skills, including face‑to‑face discussion with clients and contractors and verbal and written communication.
* Full driving licence and willingness to travel to sites.


Desirable Skills and Experience

* Proven experience as an ECoW or a similar field‑based ecological role.
* Knowledge of construction management, civil engineering and project management.
* Membership of CIEEM or AEnvCoW, or the ability to attain membership within three months of appointment.
* Excellent IT skills.
