Automation Engineer – Life Sciences Sector | Athlone, Ireland
We are currently seeking an experienced Automation Engineer to support a leading life sciences client based in Athlone, Co. Westmeath. This is a fantastic opportunity for a motivated professional to take ownership of high-impact automation projects from design through to commissioning within a GMP-regulated environment.
This is a full-time, on-site position with standard hours (Monday–Friday, 9am–5pm), with some flexibility required during key project phases. Long-term project potential with highly competitive contracting rates.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead the design, development, testing, and commissioning of control systems across multiple projects.
* Provide technical expertise in PLC and HMI/SCADA systems, with a focus on Siemens platforms (TIA Portal, WinCC).
* Collaborate with OEMs and internal teams to develop, test, and fine-tune control system code.
* Drive automation change controls, manage system upgrades, and implement corrective actions and continuous improvements.
* Ensure full compliance with GxP, GAMP, and 21 CFR Part 11 guidelines throughout the automation lifecycle.
* Participate in qualification and validation activities, supporting cross-functional teams to ensure project timelines and quality standards are met.
* Assist in training operators and technicians on efficient use of control systems.
* Represent the client during vendor coordination, FATs/SATs, and system integration.
Required Skills & Experience
* Degree-qualified in Electrical, Electronic, Systems Engineering, Computer Science, or a related discipline.
* 5+ years hands-on experience with automated control systems, preferably in the pharmaceutical or life sciences sector.
* Strong knowledge of Siemens PLC platforms (TIA Portal, WinCC), with proficiency in ladder logic, FBD, and STL programming.
* Familiarity with industrial communication protocols such as ProfiNet, Profibus, and Modbus.
* Experience with SCADA/HMI platforms (e.g., WinCC, Intouch, Ignition).
* Knowledge of GAMP, GMP, and cybersecurity principles relevant to SCADA systems.
* Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with a structured, solutions-oriented mindset.
