Summary: A Senior Environmental Compliance Specialist is required for a biopharmaceutical company in West Cork. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring compliance with all relevant environmental regulations and company policies, promoting sustainable practices, and supporting the continuous improvement of onsite environmental performance. The incumbent will work closely with reliability engineers, maintenance planners, service providers, and regulatory agencies such as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The Senior Environmental Compliance Specialist will play a vital part in the management of site waste, reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, and the promotion of sustainable transport solutions. Responsibilities: Waste Management, overseeing the safe, compliant, and cost-effective handling, storage, transport, classification, and disposal of all waste streams generated by pharmaceutical manufacturing operations. Oversee waste management compliance, including the assessment and approval of new waste channels and the reduction of solid waste wherever possible. Provide onsite oversight for waste management service contracts. Prepare and manage all environmental compliance reporting: waste registers, hazardous waste tracking forms, annual environmental reports, and internal audits. Develop, implement, and monitor waste management procedures and SOPs in alignment with GMP, EH&S, and EPA requirements Support site waste infrastructure (waste yards, storage areas, temporary holding facilities) ensuring safe design, access control, and housekeeping Lead waste minimisation initiatives and contribute to site sustainability and circularity objectives. Collaborate with manufacturing, project engineering, labs, and quality teams to ensure proper waste segregation and compliant disposal from point of generation. Oversee compliance of the F-gas inventory/register, ensuring all refrigerant-containing equipment is tracked, labelled, and documented correctly. Ensure compliance with EU/Irish F-gas regulations, including leak-check frequencies, recordkeeping, proper refrigerant handling, and certified personnel requirements. Oversee leak detection programmes, system inspections, and compliance verifications with Engineering and approved contractors. Support investigations on leaks Review service and maintenance records to ensure proper recovery, recycling, and disposal of refrigerants. Lead continuous improvement initiatives to reduce F-gas emissions and support transition to lower-GWP alternatives where feasible. Oversee the site Bunds Programme in coordination with facilities, ensuring all bunds, containment areas, and associated infrastructure remain fully compliant with environmental regulations and site standards. Drive initiatives that promote green and sustainable transportation options across the site. Actively contribute to the Environmental Technical Committee and play a key role within the site Sustainability. Qualifications & Experience: Bachelors degree in environmental engineering, Environmental Science, or a closely related field. A minimum of 5 to 7 years experience in environmental compliance/engineering Comprehensive understanding of environmental legislation and compliance procedures. Proven project management and organisational skills. Prior experience engaging with regulatory authorities, such as the EPA, is an advantage.
