Position Description
The role is to manage a dedicated team of Designers in specific areas across the country. The Design Manager oversees the creation of network design packs for new customer connections, ensuring they meet network standards. These packs are used by construction crews and contractor staff to carry out work safely on the electricity network.
The role also involves liaising and negotiating with landowners, local authorities and other stakeholders to obtain permissions or waive leave for overhead and underground cable routes. Completed designs are updated to the distribution network system, becoming live and part of the electrical system. The Design Manager delivers excellent customer service within a specified timeframe, adhering to EBS Code of Charter.
Key Responsibilities
* Manage design workload as agreed with the Senior Design Manager
* Lead the design team, providing feedback and development opportunities
* Prioritise design work and allocate tasks to engineering officers and designers
* Review design processes to ensure excellent customer service while maintaining relevant standards
* Participate in the organisation and scheduling of work
* Provide technical support and assistance to ensure high‑quality designs
* Deliver major reinforcement and renewable projects on time as part of the capital delivery programme
* Maintain adherence to Customer Charter timelines
* Ensure As‑Builts are returned promptly
* Maintain knowledge of HV, MV and LV electrical networks across all asset types
* Prepare, verify and approve designs, scopes, costs, risk assessments and preliminary health & safety plans
* Coordinate other resources involved in design and scoping (ecologists, archaeologists, asbestos surveyors, site investigations, etc.)
* Ensure compliance with H&S legislation and liaise with H&S Advisors
* Act as PSDP Contact Person where required
* Manage the delivery of designs through contractors as needed
* Negotiate with local authorities, land owners and other parties to obtain consent in line with ESB policies
Experience and Qualifications
* 3rd Level qualification or equivalent work experience
* Minimum of 7 years relevant experience
* Experience implementing design standards and policies
* Knowledge of network assets (sub‑stations, lines, cables, protection, metering)
* Understanding and application of ESB Network Quality Management standards
* Strong communication and interpersonal skills for internal team building and external stakeholder engagement
* Full clean driving licence
Desirable
* Project management skills
* ESBN IT systems knowledge (IWM, GIS, E Plan)
* Design experience
* People management experience
Location
Finglas. Regular travel to site and within and outside the region will be a feature of the role. ESB is committed to smart working, allowing flexible ways of working with attendance at the workplace for at least one anchor day per week.

Salary
€69,000 – €81,000 per annum
