Applications are invited for the position of Candidate CNS/CNS – Psycho Oncology at St Vincent’s University Hospital. Closing date: 29/06/2026.
Key Responsibilities
Comply with An Bord Altranais Code of Professional Conduct and Scope of Practice for Nursing.
Be aware of and act on guidance from the National Council for the Professional Development of Nursing and Midwifery.
Accept referrals for patients with cancer referred to the Psycho‑oncology Service.
Undertake initial assessment of patients referred to the service, paying attention to biopsychosocial elements of care using best evidence and evidence‑based practice in Psycho‑Oncology Nursing care.
Use the outcomes of screening and assessment to formulate a plan of care/case management in conjunction with the Psycho‑Oncology team, patient, family and/or carer and to evaluate the plan.
Demonstrate appropriate expertise in Psycho‑Oncology, awareness of the psychological experience for individuals diagnosed with cancer and its impact on identity, relationships, education, career and other aspects of life.
In‑depth knowledge of the pathophysiology of psychological distress and psychiatric issues for people with cancer.
With consent, work closely with family members and other agencies to obtain collateral.
Engage with patients in distress, demonstrating understanding and empathy.
Use a case‑management approach with patients with complex needs in collaboration with Psychology, Psychiatry and other mental health colleagues in primary and secondary care as appropriate.
Identify health‑related concerns (physical, psychological, social, financial and spiritual) that may be impacting patients and families; refer to specialist services as appropriate.
Ensure patients have access to relevant information enabling understanding of psychological distress and support options; identify and meet educational needs.
Provide first‑line contact for all staff with queries relating to the speciality.
Support MDT colleagues in developing understanding of causes and maintenance of psychological distress in the cancer context.
Implement initiatives ensuring efficient and effective treatments are commenced in a timely manner in line with NCCP (2017) and Vision (2020) requirements.
Have working knowledge of Mental Health Legislation and associated regulations.
Advance education within MDTs regarding challenges for people with pre‑existing mental health difficulties; review, evaluate and improve educational programmes regularly.
Establish clear lines of communication with Medical staff, Nursing staff and relevant professionals; act as expert practitioner improving outcomes for patients experiencing psychological distress.
Work autonomously, attend regular meetings to review service performance, hospital and business plan.
Demonstrate responsibility for professional growth through personal development plans.
Support patient advocacy and service design, respecting patients’ values and promoting voices.
Ensure patient confidentiality and dignity, maintaining ethical standards.
Attend multi‑disciplinary meetings to maintain up‑to‑date clinical knowledge.
Provide safe environment for patients and staff, addressing health, safety and risk management issues.
Liaise with training and academic departments to deliver ongoing education to staff and students.
Participate in professional organisations and conferences for continuing education.
Initiate and participate in research relevant to the speciality, aiming to optimise patient care.
Facilitate and monitor quality initiatives; assist MDT with data collection and audit.
Act as resource nurse for speciality matters; attend managerial and clinical meetings requiring specialist input.
Demonstrate leadership, change management capacity, work across organisational and professional boundaries.
Ensure effective use of information technology for patient care and administrative support.
Create learning opportunities within MDTs through journal clubs and conferences.
Maintain links with Regional Centres for Nursing & Midwifery Education, Planning and Development Units and higher education institutes.
Engage with projects to improve services based on guidance from Principal Clinical Psychologist/Psycho‑oncology Liaison Psychiatry consultant.
Be flexible to changing local and organisational requirements.
Work on own initiative under supervision of the Principal Clinical Psychologist/Psycho‑oncology Liaison Psychiatry consultant.
