Base pay range
OPW now requires the assistance of additional staff at Civil Engineering Technician Grade I level to support the flood risk management programme. Vacancies now exist in the Survey and Coastal Monitoring Section, Hydrometric Section, and Arterial Drainage Maintenance & Construction Section of the OPW’s Flood Risk Management Service.
Sections and Roles
Survey and Coastal Monitoring Section
The Section is responsible for coastal monitoring programmes, data analysis, research, innovative monitoring techniques, and asset management. Responsibilities include inspecting schemes under the Coast Protection Act, 1963.
The Role
Reporting to an Engineer Grade II or III, the role involves collecting, processing, and managing coastal monitoring data.
Principal Duties
* Undertaking coastal surveys, preparing reports and drawings.
* Reviewing survey data, including external contractors’ data.
* Preparing and monitoring works programmes.
* Measuring, supervising, and recording work progress.
* Implementing safety systems and risk assessments.
* Performing other field and office duties as required.
Hydrometric Section
This section manages a national hydrometric network, collecting water level and river flow data to support flood risk management and the EU Floods Directive.
The Role
Involves collecting, processing, and managing hydrometric data, and maintaining hydrometric stations.
Principal Duties
* Operating and maintaining hydrometric stations, calibrating, and validating data.
* Flow measurements, rain gauge maintenance, and establishing new stations.
* Installing telemetry equipment and managing hydrometric data.
* Supervising staff and contractors, planning and supervising hydraulic projects.
* Surveying rivers, lakes, coastal locations, and infrastructure.
* Implementing safety and undertaking risk assessments.
* Training staff and developing technical skills.
Arterial Drainage Maintenance and Construction Section
This section manages drainage schemes under the Arterial Drainage Acts and coastal protection schemes.
The Role
Supports development, implementation, and supervision of maintenance and capital works programs.
Principal Duties
* Surveying, setting out projects, investigating complaints, and preparing work programmes.
* Measuring and supervising work progress, implementing safety, and managing staff and contractors.
Travel is expected, with travel and subsistence paid according to Civil Service regulations. Candidates may work in accordance with the OPW’s Blended Working Policy, depending on business needs.
