The role
Senior Machine Vision Engineer – Galway
Atlantach Technical Services is an engineering solutions company specialising in Project Management, Operations & Maintenance and Commissioning.
We are hiring a Senior Machine Vision Engineer to support a very high-profile medical device client in Co. Galway.
Duties and Responsibilities:

Lead the development of internal capabilities to assess, design, and implement advanced automated inspection solutions using Machine Vision and Image Processing technologies
This role is responsible for technical leadership across vision system projects, from concept through to production deployment and support.
Provide mentorship and guidance to engineers while building strong cross‑functional relationships across Manufacturing, Quality, and PD teams.
Support and enhance existing production equipment while driving innovation, standards, and best practices in machine vision applications.
This is a hands‑on technical leadership role involving automation systems, electro‑mechanical integration, robotics, and industrial computer systems.

Technical Leadership & Strategy

Lead the technical design and architecture of machine vision systems to meet complex manufacturing requirements.
Define and promote best practices, standards, and design approaches for machine vision across the site.
Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior and mid-level engineers.
Act as a subject matter expert in machine vision, supporting strategic decision‑making and technology selection.

Vision System Design & Development

Lead the design, development and implementation of robust end‑to‑end vision solutions, including hardware selection (cameras, optics, lighting) and software architecture.
Conduct proof‑of‑concept studies and technology evaluations to assess feasibility and suitability for integration into system designs.
Lead the development and review of vision applications using platforms such as Cognex (In‑Sight, VisionPro, Designer), Keyence XG/XGX, HALCON.
Define and implement system integration with PLCs, robotics, and automation platforms, using standard industrial communication protocols (e.g. OPC UA, Ethernet/IP, Profinet) and software tools such as C#, C/C++, and VB.NET where required. Experience with WPF is advantageous.

Project Delivery & Execution

Lead or significantly contribute to project planning, timelines, and technical deliverables.
Drive execution from concept through commissioning, validation, and handover to production.
Ensure delivery of scalable, maintainable, and high‑performance inspection systems.

Advanced Algorithms & Data Systems

Develop and oversee implementation of advanced image processing algorithms (metrology, feature extraction, OCR, defect detection).
Oversee data handling strategies, including storage, traceability, and analysis of large image datasets.
Lead performance optimisation to meet cycle time, reliability, and accuracy requirements.

Equipment Support & Continuous Improvement

Provide expert‑level troubleshooting and root cause analysis for vision‑related issues in production.
Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance equipment performance and inspection capability.
Collaborate cross‑functionally to resolve complex technical and organisational challenges.

Compliance, Standards & Governance

Ensure all vision systems comply with corporate procedures, quality standards, and regulatory requirements.
Lead adherence to change control, validation, and documentation standards.
Support vendor selection, technology evaluation, and external partnerships where required.

Authority

You have authority to stop the job if you feel there is an unsafe work practice which could result in a risk of injury, have an environmental impact or risk to equipment and other personnel.
Carry out your duties to meet Quality, Safety and Environmental requirements at all times.

Requirements

Level 8 NFQ qualification or equivalent in Electronic Engineering or a related technical discipline.
Candidates are required to have 5+ years’ experience in machine vision, automation, or equipment engineering roles.
Strong hands‑on experience with machine vision platforms, including Cognex (VisionPro, In‑Sight, Designer) and Keyence XG/XGX. Experience with MVTec HALCON or LabVIEW is advantageous.
Working understanding of Optics, Lighting Techniques and a proven track record of having designed and develop machine vision hardware solutions with industrial cameras, essential.
Proven excellent troubleshooting/diagnostics skills.
Solid understanding of statistical analysis, measurement systems, and sampling methodologies in an inspection context.
Digital Image Processing techniques and dataflows applied to industrial machine vision.
Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of an engineering team.
Good written and verbal communication skills with a practical, solution‑focused mindset.
