Job description
The Consultant in Emergency Medicine will provide leadership and expert clinical care in the management of patients presenting to the Emergency Department (ED). The postholder will work as part of a multidisciplinary team to ensure timely, safe, and effective assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of emergency and acute presentations, contributing to service improvement and clinical governance across the hospital.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical Responsibilities
* Provide comprehensive consultant-led emergency medical care to patients attending the Emergency Department.
* Lead and supervise junior medical staff, nursing, and allied health professionals in the assessment and management of emergency cases.
* Ensure high standards of clinical practice, patient safety, and documentation are maintained.
* Participate in the on-call rota for the Emergency Department as required.
* Liaise with inpatient specialties to facilitate appropriate admission, referral, or discharge.
* Contribute to the development and implementation of clinical pathways and protocols for emergency care.
Leadership & Management
* Provide clinical leadership within the ED and support multidisciplinary teamwork.
* Participate in departmental and hospital management structures as appropriate.
* Contribute to service planning, development, and audit in alignment with HSE strategic objectives.
* Ensure efficient use of resources and support continuous quality improvement.
Education & Training
* Participate in the teaching, training, and supervision of Non-Consultant Hospital Doctors (NCHDs), nursing staff, and other healthcare professionals.
* Support postgraduate training programmes in Emergency Medicine in collaboration with the Royal College of Emergency Medicine (RCEM) / Irish Committee for Emergency Medicine Training (ICEMT).
* Engage in continuing professional development (CPD) and meet Medical Council requirements for maintenance of professional competence.
Research & Audit
* Participate in and promote clinical audit, research, and evidence-based practice within the department.
* Support innovation and contribute to academic or service-based research as appropriate.
Job requirements
Eligibility Criteria / Qualifications
* Registration as a Specialist in Emergency Medicine on the Specialist Division of the Register of Medical Practitioners maintained by the Medical Council of Ireland.
* Possession of Fellowship of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine (FRCEM) or equivalent qualification.
* Significant post-qualification experience in Emergency Medicine, including senior clinical leadership experience.
