Principal Duties and Responsibilities
The Senior Speech and Language Therapist will:
* Assess, diagnose, plan, implement, and evaluate treatment programs for communication disorders post-stroke, including aphasia, dysarthria, apraxia of speech, dysphonia, and feeding/swallowing disorders, in accordance with professional standards.
* Make clinical decisions for complex cases following assessments.
* Arrange and conduct assessments and interventions in appropriate settings, such as the stroke unit, SLT department, video-fluoroscopy, or FEES clinic.
* Communicate assessment results and recommendations to service users and relevant parties.
* Document assessments, diagnoses, treatment plans, and clinical notes per departmental and professional standards.
* Collaborate with service users, families, carers, and staff in goal setting and planning.
* Provide clinical leadership, supervise staff, prioritize workload, and promote morale.
* Maintain standards of practice and foster collaborative relationships with colleagues and professionals.
* Engage in team activities and participate in clinics, meetings, case conferences, and ward rounds.
* Contribute to policy and procedure development, seeking advice when needed.
* Support health promotion activities and ensure confidentiality, ethics, and legislative compliance.
* Operate within the scope of practice as per CORU and local guidelines.
* Perform other duties as assigned by the SLT Manager.
Education and Training
* Participate in mandatory and ongoing professional development, including training, conferences, and research.
* Engage in supervision and peer support.
* Contribute to training and supervision of students and new staff.
Health & Safety
* Promote a safe working environment and adhere to health and safety policies.
* Participate in risk management and incident reporting.
* Comply with HIQA standards and sustainability initiatives.
Administrative Responsibilities
* Coordinate and deliver services within designated areas.
* Review and allocate resources, develop service plans, and evaluate service quality.
* Maintain accurate records, prepare reports, and represent the department at meetings.
* Promote team working, diversity, and respect.
* Manage stock and equipment, and participate in IT developments.
