Mechanical Design Engineer – Low Voltage Switchgear & Product Development
BMC Manufacturing is Irelands leading manufacturer of Low Voltage Switchgear, with 250 staff across four production sites.
As part of our continuous expansion, we are seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to join our Engineering Team. Reporting to the Head of Engineering you will be based in our Damastown offices.
Summary:
Responsible for the design, development, and structural validation of Low Voltage (LV) IEC & ANSI switchgear products, ensuring compliance with customer specifications and international standards. The role involves 3D modelling, FEA, mechanical design optimization, documentation, and cross-functional collaboration from concept to production release.
Key Responsibilities:
* Design and develop Low Voltage IEC & ANSI switchgear products (e.g., Schneider BlokSeT panels, control panels, IT racks, NEMA-rated switch racks, junction boxes, and motor starter panels).
* Perform structural calculations (wind, seismic, static, fatigue, and buckling analysis) and FEA to validate mechanical integrity of panels and enclosures.
* Develop 3D CAD models, assemblies, and detailed production drawings using Autodesk Inventor, SolidWorks, and CREO.
* Prepare and release Bill of Materials (BOM), production drawings, and documentation through ERP and PLM systems.
* Conduct steel structural analysis using STAAD-Pro, including load calculations and base plate design for racks and prefabricated control rooms.
* Standardize and automate design workflows using Design Tables, Family Tables, Macros, and Map Keys to enhance productivity.
* Lead and support New Product Introduction (NPI) and cost-out projects for small AC induction motors and circuit breakers.
* Perform tolerance analysis, CTQ studies, and Six Sigma (DFSS) capability analysis for key mechanical dimensions.
* Coordinate with clients, design teams, and manufacturing units to ensure compliance with IEC, ASCE, AISC, ASME, and customer-specific standards (e.g., Saudi Aramco, SEC).
* Oversee selection of materials, fabrication processes, and production methods to ensure design feasibility and manufacturability.
* Document and manage design risk analysis, design changes, and as-built documentation.
* Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure timely completion of projects, maintaining quality and cost targets.
* Develop CAD models and perform mould design and thermal analysis for glass container products using Pro/E, AutoCAD, and VERTI-THERM software.
Skills & Competencies:
* Strong proficiency in Autodesk Inventor, SolidWorks, CREO, Pro/E Wildfire, AutoCAD, STAAD-Pro, and NX-CAM.
* Knowledge of FEA, structural analysis, sheet metal fabrication, and busbar design.
* Familiarity with IEC, ANSI, ASCE, AISC, ASME design standards.
* Hands-on experience with PLM and ERP systems.
* Analytical mindset with experience in Six Sigma / DFSS tools.
* Excellent problem-solving, documentation, and cross-functional communication skills.
Education & Experience:
* Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent.
* Experience with UL891 would be an advantage
* 5 plus years of experience in switchgear or electrical equipment mechanical design.
* Experience in structural and thermal analysis, CAD modelling, and product development preferred.
