Overview
We are seeking a highly experienced Chief Engineer to provide cross-site technical leadership in systems integration, controls, and mechanical engineering for complex automation solutions in the life sciences/medical device sector. This pivotal role combines deep technical expertise with strong leadership and influencing skills to ensure our projects deliver right-first-time, on time, and to the highest standards of quality and compliance.
The Chief Engineer will define and enforce engineering standards, mentor technical teams, and act as the technical authority in customer-facing engagements. As a key member of the leadership team, the Chief Engineer will balance hands-on technical depth with the ability to lead in a matrix environment, collaborating closely with Site Directors, Program Director, and Sales.
Key Responsibilities
* Provide cross-site technical authority in controls, mechanical engineering, and systems integration.
* Define, maintain, and enforce engineering standards and playbooks across design, debug, and build.
* Drive excellence in controls programming and mechanical design, ensuring both disciplines integrate seamlessly in machine builds.
* Lead customer-facing technical engagements, from design reviews through FAT/SAT, serving as the technical assurance point.
* Partner with Sales and Program Management to assess technical feasibility, scope projects accurately, and build customer confidence.
* Oversee debug and integration risk, leading structured problem-solving for complex escalations.
* Champion adoption of digital twin/simulation tools to de-risk and accelerate commissioning.
* Mentor engineering staff across disciplines, building technical depth and succession pipelines.
* Ensure compliance with technical and regulatory standards in all engineering processes.
* Influence cross-functional leaders to drive adherence to standards, even without direct line authority.
Qualifications & Experience
* Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical/Controls Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or Systems Engineering.
* 15+ years' experience in automation/machine building, with strong exposure to life sciences/medical device projects.
* Expert-level knowledge in Controls Engineering.
* Strong Mechanical Engineering expertise.
* Proven track record leading customer-facing projects through design, debug, FAT/SAT, and validation.
* Demonstrated success managing and influencing in a matrix environment, balancing cross-site and cross-functional responsibilities.
* Skilled communicator with the ability to engage credibly with customers, sales teams, and technical staff.
* Familiarity with vision systems and industrial communication protocols.
* Strong knowledge of regulatory standards.
What We Offer
* Opportunity to shape the technical standards and integration approach across a growing international organisation.
* A pivotal leadership role at the intersection of engineering, customer engagement, and delivery assurance.
* Competitive salary, bonus, and benefits package.
* Professional development opportunities in advanced automation, digital twin, and leadership.
