The Communications Division’s responsibilities include the National Broadband Plan, Telecommunications Policy and Regulation, and Digital Strategy and Postal policy. The Communications Division also encompasses the Strategy Development and Business Management Unit.
About The Role
Reporting to the Chief Technology Officer, the Senior Telecommunications Engineer will be responsible for providing technical advice on specific policy matters within the Unit and providing strategic, proactive, future‑facing advice and information on wider digital market and technology developments.
Key Objectives of the Senior Telecommunications Engineer
Delivery of Department’s responsibilities with regard to the Digital Connectivity Strategy to ensure the key targets for 2028 and 2030 are met
Developing and refining the implementation plans for the key enablers identified within the Digital Connectivity Strategy including the development of the State’s international connectivity infrastructure, ensuring the widespread deployment of 5G coverage, ensuring gigabit broadband services are deployed across the country and supporting the use of new emerging technologies, etc
Delivery of the Department’s responsibilities with regard to Climate Adaptation and Network Resilience
Providing strategic advice for specific Departmental priority areas and programmes where appropriate such as the National Broadband Plan; Metropolitan Area Networks; National & EU regulation policy development.
Key duties and responsibilities of the role
Working closely with senior management to refine and develop the strategy for the communications area on an ongoing basis
Creating, overseeing and delivering on key SDBM programmes such as pilot 5G programmes, new technology pilots, international connectivity initiatives and network resilience
Assisting in key stakeholder briefings, consultations and communications as required and where relevant to the technology area
Supporting other units in the Communications Division in the delivery of key programmes such as Universal Service Obligations (USO) for broadband services
Providing advice and assisting in policy development with other divisions in the Department with respect to the telecommunications market and its enhancement
Working with certain EU working groups to represent the Irish State’s position and to develop policies relevant to the telecommunications market.
