Three years initially with possibility of extensionStart date: 1st of April 2026Closing Date: 9:00am on Tuesday 17th of FebruarySummary of PostThe School of Population Health is a new school at RCSI, but one that builds on an impressive tradition of impactful science, research and scholarship. The School of Population Health integrates diverse scientific disciplines, including epidemiology, statistics, intervention and implementation health systems research, health services research, health psychology, health policy and health economics. This multidisciplinary approach supports the development of multifaceted solutions necessary to address the complex nature of population health challenges.Established in 2016, the RCSI Data Science Centre (DSC) seeks to improve human health and quality of life by applying a rigorous and innovative approach to the design, analysis and reporting of health research studies. DSC staff have expertise in biostatistics, bioinformatics, epidemiology, research methodology and data management. We collaborate with RCSI researchers, departments and faculties on high-impact substantive research projects. The DSC provides training and teaching in all areas of research methodology, support in all phases of the development and conduct and publication of research.We are looking for an individual with experience in biostatistical and/or bioinformatics applied in health research to support RCSI staff and postgraduate students in research activities, education and training.The principal aim of this post is in supporting RCSI academics and researchers in research activities, particularly in the areas of health research, grant and publication support, teaching and training in research methods, biostatistics/bioinformatics, developing resources and possibility for supervision of postgraduate students. The post requires someone to work in an environment that demands considerable resourcefulness and flexibility, who demonstrates initiative, openness and resilience.Specifically, the duties of the post are:Working with the Head of Data Science Centre and current DSC staff in providing consultation on methodological supports for RCSI staff and postgraduate researchers.Data management and analysis, preferably with health data or in a clinical setting.Statistical programming, including with Python, R, Stata or other software for interrogating data.Contribute and deliver on DSC teaching programmes including contributions to Masters and Doctoral, and short course programmes.Supporting research funding applications to national and international funding bodiesContributing to research publications and reports as required.Performing such other related duties as may be required.Representing the best interests of the Data Science Centre, School of Population Health and RCSI at all times.QualificationsMSc or PhD in a discipline including statistics, bioinformatics, data science, epidemiology, applied mathematics, or a related discipline.Knowledge & ExperienceExperience in data management, including large complex data, in compliance with GDPR and other data protection standards preferably with health data or in a clinical setting.Strong technical and analysis skills in statistical programming, including with Python, R, Stata or other software for interrogating data and experience in study design and research methodology.Experience delivering teaching on research methodologies and/or analysis methods to research and academic professionals and studentsAbility to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, research-oriented environment.Previous experience in providing consultation in research methods, biostatistics or bioinformatics.Experience with machine learning and/or artificial intelligence analytical approaches.Excellent written, oral, and presentation skillsSkills and CompetenciesCommunication skills: proven ability to communicate complex ideas to a range of audiencesAttention to detail and deadlinesWell-developed time-management skills in order to manage multiple tasks and working relationships effectively.Ability to build and maintain strong working relationships.Self-starter with the ability to work effectively as part of a team; is cordial, tolerant and willing to help others; is cooperative and patient; shares work and information; establishes rapport, can influence and develop effective networksConscientious: has a pro-active approach to work, anticipating and resolving problems in advance; has keen attention to detail, from anticipating and addressing issues in advance to understanding requests and delivering quality work with minimal errorsFlexibility: can operate flexibly within a busy environment, can shift focus when requiredMotivated: displays a ‘can-do’ attitude, be committed to the development of the Centre and demonstrates enthusiasm and passion for the roleWe are all too aware that imposter syndrome and the confidence gap can sometimes stop fantastic candidates putting themselves forward, so please do submit an application — we’d love to hear from you.
