Overview
As part of Amazon’s Climate Pledge to reach net zero carbon by 2040, AWS is committed to reducing carbon emissions across our infrastructure. We are seeking a Senior Sustainability Engineer to drive carbon reduction in the design of our Data Centers across our rapidly expanding EMEA portfolio. As a Senior Sustainability Engineer, you will work closely with the AWS Sustainability team and the Global Design Engineering team to reduce carbon intensity in current and future AWS data centers. You will create mechanisms to identify opportunities for carbon reduction and track their success. Our standard data center solutions are adapted to the many geographies in which we operate, and our building materials, structures, and equipment are adapted to that local environment, the materials available, and the construction techniques and competencies in that market. This provides the potential for specific carbon reduction opportunities on a building‑by‑building basis.
Key Responsibilities
Understanding the design and functionality of AWS data centers globally
Creating and modifying existing mechanisms to track carbon throughout the project life‑cycle
Owning the tracking of carbon for projects within your region – including working directly with our construction team and equipment suppliers to identify opportunities for carbon reduction
Identifying project/region specific opportunities to reduce carbon on specific builds
Proposing and developing carbon reduction initiatives to be implemented globally across the AWS fleet
Owning sustainability certifications for builds in your region as mandated by building permit requirements or AWS policies
Supporting our public policy teams in engaging with local authorities on sustainability issues
Producing clear and concise documentation such as detailed design specifications, white papers, and reports
Initiating and driving sustainability initiatives for our future generations of data center designs
Being positive, offering creative, out‑of‑the‑box solutions, and enjoying the work
About the Team
Our engineers have hands‑on practical sustainability experience across the project lifecycle – from concept design through construction, commissioning, and handover. You will be relied on as a subject‑matter expert in embodied carbon, material decarbonization, and sustainability compliance. At Amazon we highly support continued learning opportunities and focus on continued employee development. The DCE Sustainability team's mission is to advance AWS’s goals of net‑zero carbon emissions by 2040 and water‑positive by 2030. The broader Data Center Design Engineering team at AWS consists of architects, structural, mechanical, electrical, civil, fire protection, and controls engineers working to design the next generation of data centers.
