JOB DESCRIPTION

QUALIFICATIONS:

* A primary degree (Level 8 NFQ) in Food Science, Food Technology, or other food-related areas.
* A doctoral degree (Level 10 NFQ) degree in Food Science, Food Technology, Food Processing, Food Quality and Sensory, Food Chemistry, or Food Biotechnology.

OVERALL PUROPSE OF JOB:

The Department of Biological Sciences welcomes applications for the permanent position of Associate Professor B/Associate Professor A (Previously known as Lecturer/Senior Lecturer, respectively) in Food Science. We are looking for an academic with the capacity to build a well-funded research programme of international significance, producing high quality research outputs that will make a tangible impact on societies global challenges. This research programme will complement the teaching of Food Science at MSc and BSc levels at the University of Limerick.

The Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Limerick (UL) is widely regarded as one of the leading centres for food and biological related research and education in Europe. Nestled along the scenic banks of the River Shannon, the department had built a reputation for excellence in research, innovative teaching, and community engagement.

The Department is home to cutting-edge food processing, food sensory analysis, bioanalytical, cellular and biomolecular facilities funded through a combination of university investment and international grants which have served as a nexus for research in areas such as food science and health, cell and molecular biology, biotechnology and equine science. The Department consists of 25 academics supported by 7 technical staff and 1 administrator. It has over 40 PhD students and 16 postdoctoral scientists across a variety of disciplines such as food science, food microbiology, food processing, functional foods, cell biology, protein chemistry, cancer and neurobiology, infection and immunity, environmental biology, reproductive biology, equine science as well as microbial ecology.

* Candidates for this post will have a primary degree (level 8 NFQ) in food science, food chemistry, food technology or a closely related area and a doctoral degree (level 10 NFQ) in food science, food technology, food chemistry, food biotechnology, food biochemistry, or a related area.
* Expertise and interest in how processing affects all aspects of food composition, ingredient/product functionality, i.e. techno functional, bio functional and nutritional properties along with processing impacts on the microbiological and sensory properties as well as the role of raw material composition on processability.

Candidates should have substantial Post Doctoral experience, a record of independent research achievements and an appropriate publication record. Candidates should have the ability to lecture to students and be committed to teaching excellence. The successful candidate is expected to be able to work independently as well as contribute to research centres/groups, such as the Bernal Institute ( http://bernalinstitute.com/) and the Health Research Institute (https://www.ul.ie/hri ) to develop and enhance the subject areas of food science and health.

A generous research package including start-up funds, laboratory space and equipment will be provided.

* A primary degree (level 8 NFQ) in food science, food chemistry, food technology or a closely related area.
* A doctoral degree (level 10 NFQ) in food science, food technology, food chemistry, food biotechnology, food biochemistry, or a related area.
* Minimum of 3 years (or equivalent) relevant post PhD professional experience.
* Evidence of teaching in third level institutions in food science or closely related areas (through lectures, laboratory classes and tutorials)
* Track record as an outstanding food scientist with a demonstrated interest in the interface between raw material composition and how processing affects all aspects of food quality and functionality.
* Evidence of relevant and traceable research experience post PhD, in one or more of the following areas:
* Food ingredients processing, technology and chemistry.
* Food microbiology and biotechnology.
* Food engineering, product development and process optimisation.
* Marine and animal derived ingredients (e.g. fish and meat) processing, technology and chemistry.
* Role of food matrix on product functionality and nutrient bioavailability.
* Analytical food chemistry.
* Sensory evaluation and flavour chemistry.
* A significant track record of publications in top-tier journals and/or in books by prestigious publishers, in food science, technology or nutrition and wider recognition in the research community.
* Experience in the preparation of research proposals to obtain competitive/prestigious funding from applied or basic external funding sources.
* Skills in a range of innovative laboratory techniques relevant to food science.
* Synergy with current department research strengths and infrastructure.
* Experience in performing administrative tasks and contributing to periodic departmental and programme reviews and reports

Essential Criteria in addition to the above for Associate Professor A:

* Minimum of 5 years (or equivalent) relevant post PhD professional experience.
* Evidence of successfully leading multidisciplinary research programmes and in obtaining significant research funding from national, international or industry sources.
* Traceable supervision of MSc by research and PhD candidates to completion as primary supervisor.
* Track-record of publications in prestigious journals as senior author in last 5 years.
* Clear evidence of a leadership position within an academic or industrial research environment.
* Evidence of leadership in curriculum development or relevant industrial experience.
* Evidence of leadership in professional organisations.
* Clear and demonstrable evidence of ability to sustainably/continually secure competitive funding from both applied and basic funding sources nationally and internationally.
* A research programme directly in-line with current and future food science challenges.
* Evidence of funded research programme leadership, e.g. overall coordination of multidisciplinary and multisite project teams.
* Evidence of delivery of invited, keynote and plenary lectures.
* Successful track record in mentoring postdoctoral researchers.
* Evidence of experience as course director or other academic coordinating role.
* Ability to participate in and contribute to the overall intellectual life of the University, the academic discipline and society
* Qualification in teaching to third-level students.

An Applicant Must Include:

* A research plan (up to two pages in length) describing the research that the candidate would envisage undertaking if offered the position at the University of Limerick,
* A teaching plan (up to two pages in length) detailing how the candidate would contribute to teaching and learning, if offered the position, in relation to the BSc in Food Science and Health ( https://www.ul.ie/courses/bachelor- science- food- science- and- health ) and the MSc in Functional Foods and Product Development ( https://www.ul.ie/gps/courses/functional- foods- and-product-development-msc ) degree programmes offered by the Department.

These plans should include how the applicant proposes to advance programme offerings and research activities (including internal and external collaboration) in Food Science and Health.
