Job Title: Consultant in Geriatric Medicine
Location: University Hospital South of Ireland Ireland
Job Type: Full-time
Job Summary:
We are inviting applications for the position of Consultant in Geriatric Medicine at a leading public hospital in Ireland. This is a vital clinical leadership role within our multidisciplinary Older Persons service, focused on delivering high-quality, patient-centred care to older adults across acute, subacute, and community settings.
The post offers the opportunity to shape and develop innovative models of care for older persons, including frailty services, orthogeriatrics, and integrated discharge planning, with strong links to rehabilitation and community services.
Key Responsibilities:
Provide consultant-led care to elderly patients across acute wards, outpatient clinics, rehabilitation units, and/or community-based programs.
Lead the development of comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) and frailty management pathways.
Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team including nursing, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, medical social work, and dietetics.
Participate in joint care models such as orthogeriatrics or surgical liaison services, where appropriate.
Support safe and effective discharge planning and community follow-up.
Contribute to the design and implementation of quality improvement and patient safety initiatives.
Participate in the hospital’s on-call rota, clinical governance structures, and departmental leadership.
Teach and supervise NCHDs, interns, and medical students; support postgraduate training.
Engage in continued professional development, audit, and research activities as appropriate.
Requirements:
Full Specialist Registration with the Irish Medical Council in Geriatric Medicine (or eligibility within 6 months).
Extensive clinical experience in Geriatric Medicine, including management of frailty, multimorbidity, cognitive disorders, and complex discharge planning.
Eligibility to work under the HSE Type B Consultant Contract 2023.
Excellent communication, leadership, and multidisciplinary teamworking skills.
Demonstrated commitment to clinical governance, education, and service development.
Desirable:
Subspecialty interest or experience in areas such as:
Orthogeriatrics
Cognitive impairment/dementia services
Falls & syncope
Community outreach or integrated care
Geriatric rehabilitation
Experience with telehealth or community-based service delivery models.
Academic or research track record in geriatrics or ageing-related healthcare.
