Clinical Nurse Manager II Day Ward, FTC – UPMC Whitfield Hospital

Overview of Role
We are recruiting for a CNMII Day Ward on an 11‑month fixed‑term contract at UPMC Whitfield Hospital, Waterford. The post plays a pivotal role in service planning, coordinating, and managing activity and resources within the clinical area, and will lead the implementation and delivery of quality care.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical Responsibilities
* Manage patient care to ensure the highest professional standards using evidence‑based care planning.
* Provide a high level of professional and clinical leadership.
* Coordinate, assess, plan, deliver, and review service user care for all staff in the designated area.
* Provide safe, comprehensive nursing care within the guidelines of the Nursing & Midwifery Board of Ireland.
* Participate in teams, meetings, and committees as appropriate, communicating and working in cooperation with other team members.
* Facilitate coordination, cooperation, and liaison across healthcare teams.
* Collaborate with service users, families, carers, and other staff in treatment and care.
* Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate nursing care by direct involvement and by supervising the activities of other qualified nurses.
* Ensure care delivered by the team is based on evidence‑based standards and hospital policy.
* Regularly evaluate and monitor patient care using the hospital’s quality systems.
* Develop and promote good relationships with patients, families and carers, ensuring the ward is welcoming and homely.
* Work as an effective member of the multidisciplinary team to promote good teamwork and excellent patient care.
* Evaluate and further develop the philosophy, objectives, and goals of the department.
* Ensure all staff are familiar with the use and care of equipment and that equipment is maintained in good working condition.
* Maintain strict confidentiality of patient information.
Managerial Responsibilities
* Supervise, coordinate, and deploy nursing and support staff to ensure optimal care delivery through fair and competent work allocation.
* Manage communication at ward and departmental level and facilitate team building.
* Provide staff leadership and motivation conducive to good working relations and performance.
* Manage all resources efficiently and effectively.
* Lead on practice development within the clinical area.
* Lead and implement change.
* Promote, facilitate, and participate in the development of nursing policies and procedures, monitoring and leading proactive improvement.
* Contribute to the formulation, development, and implementation of policies and procedures at area and hospital level.
* Actively participate in the Nursing Management structure by supporting the Assistant Director of Nursing and deputising in their absence when required.
* Maintain all necessary clinical and administrative records and reporting arrangements.
Quality & Safety – Safe Culture
* Actively participate throughout the working day in the pursuit of excellence.
* Plan, monitor, analyze, and improve all quality programs in conjunction with the line manager.
* Participate in the development of performance indicators with the department manager and business objectives.
* Initiate, participate in, and evaluate audit according to CHKS, JCI, JAG, HIQA, hospital policy, and Lean requirements.
On‑Call Rota
* Participation in the on‑call manager’s rota.
Staff Development and Education
* Ensure patient care is the result of individual assessment of care needs and actively promote this within the ward team.
* Ensure the staff development and induction programme for trained and untrained staff is in place.
* Ensure each staff member has a personal development plan addressing post requirements and opportunities for further development.
* Facilitate an environment conducive to reflective practice.
Qualifications & Experience
* Registered in the General Division of the current Nursing Register held by the NMBI.
* Completed or committed to completing a Management Course.
* Minimum of 5 years qualified and previous experience within an acute surgical/medical environment.
* Previous management experience is essential.
* Experience in change management.
* Evidence of continuing professional development.
* Awareness of HR policies and procedures.
* Working knowledge of Microsoft Office packages.
* Active role in the continuous improvement programme using Lean tools and methodology.
* Excellent communication skills; effective communication with medical staff, multidisciplinary team, patients, and relatives.
* Implementation of change in accordance with new developments in nursing.
* Effective team member promoting good teamwork and excellent patient care.
* Well‑developed leadership, interpersonal, and organisational skills.
