We are seeking a highly experienced Head of Technical Operations to provide cross-site technical leadership in systems integration, controls, and mechanical engineering for complex automation solutions within the life sciences and medical device sectors. This pivotal role combines deep technical expertise with strong leadership and influencing skills, ensuring that all engineering projects are delivered right the first time, on schedule, and to the highest standards of quality and compliance.
The successful candidate will act as the technical authority across multiple locations, defining and enforcing engineering standards, mentoring multi-disciplinary teams, and representing the organisation in customer-facing engagements. You will balance hands‑on technical depth with strategic leadership, collaborating closely with Site Directors, Program Management, and Sales to drive excellence across all phases of design, build, and validation.
Key Responsibilities
Provide cross‑site technical authority in controls, mechanical engineering, and systems integration.
Define, maintain, and enforce engineering standards and playbooks across design, debug, and build phases.
Drive excellence in controls programming and mechanical design, ensuring seamless integration in machine builds.
Lead customer‑facing technical engagements from design reviews through FAT/SAT, serving as the point of technical assurance.
Partner with Sales and Program Management to assess technical feasibility, accurately scope projects, and build customer confidence.
Oversee debugging and integration risk, leading structured problem‑solving for complex technical escalations.
Champion the adoption of digital twin and simulation tools to reduce risk and accelerate commissioning.
Mentor and develop engineering teams across disciplines, fostering technical depth and leadership succession.
Ensure compliance with technical and regulatory standards in all engineering processes.
Influence cross‑functional leaders to drive adherence to standards, even without direct line authority.
Requirements
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical/Controls Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or Systems Engineering.
15+ years’ experience in automation or machine building, with strong exposure to life sciences/medical device projects.
Expert‑level knowledge in Controls Engineering and solid expertise in Mechanical Engineering.
Proven track record leading customer‑facing projects through design, debug, FAT/SAT, and validation.
Demonstrated success managing and influencing in a matrix environment across multiple sites and functions.
Excellent communicator, capable of engaging credibly with customers, sales teams, and technical staff.
Familiarity with vision systems, industrial communication protocols, and digital engineering tools.
Strong knowledge of industry and regulatory standards relevant to automated manufacturing in life sciences.
