PROJECT (AUTOMATION) ENGINEER
Reporting to: Assoc Director of Automation
Additional Information
This role will mainly be working with the Electronic Batch Record project team, as they systematically convert areas of the plant changing conventional paper based batch file processes to electronic batch records (EBR). The duration will be 2 years plus, with opportunity to work with the automation project team on other projects.
The project engineer (PE) will be part of the sites automation project team, supported by the automation project manager and automation associate director. The EBR project team is a cross functional multidisciplinary team managed by the EBR program manager.
The PE’s role is to scope the requirements for EBR conversion area-by-area; identifying equipment to be converted to EBR for readiness; understanding the complexity of implementation and scoping requirements such as: software upgrades, PLC network cards, POMS PC cart, tablet, WiFi access point, LAN ports, power requirements in the area. Determine installation costs and potentially qualification costs in the instance where a software/hardware upgrade is required. Present options with schedule/timeline, budgets, discuss with the EBR program manager and finalise delivery scope.
Once agreed, to raise PO’s for equipment purchases and vendors and contractors. Coordinate with Production managers to allow access to the area for contractors and vendors to implement upgrades and act as the Permit Requester and ensuring inductions, risk assessments and method statements are in place/reviewed by EHS.
If the equipment is not connected to the MCN, to scope the requirements, costs, timeline and level of difficulty. If the equipment is already networked, to work with the production manager in that area to identify what data fields need to be imported from the PLC/SCADA to our OSi Pi historian. Then work with vendors to obtain the data tags on the PLC/SCADAs and work with Automation/OT engineers to ensure these are available to POMS authors.
Participate in delivering engineering responsible system document lifecycle updates. Participate in team reviews and project documentation. Completion of engineering activities of the change controls.
Responsibilities

Safely coordinate the delivery of processing equipment to the site based on planned timelines and scope. Processing equipment would include e.g. autoclaves, LAF units, moulds, extruders, packaging equipment, automated vision inspection systems, lyophilsers, isolators, containment booths, stopper processing equipment and equipment upgrades – both hardware and SCADA.
Coordinate equipment installation and services hook up, working with equipment vendors and engineering personnel.
Lead the Project Team or support the Project Manager in Factory Acceptance Testing program.
Coordinate all equipment documentation requirements.
Commissioning of equipment for validation activities.
Preparation of equipment training and maintenance protocols.
Report into the Project Manager on project progress and advice/support on key project outcomes.
Contribute in a team environment on specific technical problem solving forums associated with product manufacture, aseptic fill and Packaging.
Deliver Process improvement projects.
Work with the relevant Business Unit team leaders to implement improvement opportunities.
Lead regular Equipment/Facility Project review meetings.
Attend the weekly Tier Meetings.
Attend monthly Department Meetings.
Attend monthly 1:1 meeting with supervisor.

Requirements

Third level qualification in an Engineering or Science or equivalent discipline/experience (Automation).
Experience of working within either the medical device or bio/pharmaceutical industry would be an advantage but not necessary. 5 years+ experience.
Project Management experience is preferable but not necessary.
Interpersonal skills required to operate in a multi-function project team set up.
Ability to work within a team and on own initiative to articulate and deliver specific functional requirements for all aspects of the project and work with members of various disciplines and functions across the project.

Essential Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Experience of working on a team, including strong organizational and time management skills.
Exposure to process/equipment projects preferred.
Experience in a GxP regulated environment is preferred.
Experience with manufacturing systems is preferred.
Proficient in Windows Operating System, Microsoft Office and a good understanding of PLC and Scada systems preferred.
Flexibility to respond to production issues outside normal business hours.
Ability to learn new and different technologies.

Ideal candidate should be familiar with

Working as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Siemens Step 7/TIA. A-B Rockwell RS Logix/Wonderware.
MS Project or scheduling tool.
Preparation of budgets.
Permit to work systems.
